πMitochondrial Donation Treatment
β A baby has been born in the UK using three personsβ DNA, a technique called Mitochondrial Donation Treatment (MDT
πThree parent baby with three-person DNA:
β Three parent babies are created through a technique called early pronuclear transfer
which involves transplanting the nuclear DNA from a fertilized egg into a donated egg, which contains healthy
mitochondria. This method is used to prevent passing on of mitochondrial diseases from a mother to her child
β The baby carries most of its DNA from its parents and a minor percentage from a donor.
β Potential Side Effects: Sometimes it is possible that a small amount of the maternal mitochondria with errors may get passed on during the procedure.
πMitochondrial Donation Techniques:
β Maternal Spindle Transfer Technique: Nuclear genetic material is removed from eggs and transferred into donated eggs which have had their nuclear genetic material removed

πFSSAI Alerts Fruit Traders to Ensure Compliance with Prohibition of Calcium Carbide in Fruit Ripening
β Calcium carbide, commonly used for ripening fruits like mangoes, releases acetylene gas which contains harmful traces of arsenic and phosphorus.
β These substances, also known as βMasalaβ, can cause serious health issues such as dizziness, frequent thirst, irritation, weakness, difficulty in swallowing, vomiting and skin ulcers, etc. Additionally, acetylene gas is equally hazardous to those handling it.
β There are chances that calcium carbide may come in direct contact with fruits during application and leave residues of arsenic and phosphorus on fruits.
β Due to these dangers, the use of calcium carbide for ripening fruits has been banned under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011
β Considering the issue of rampant use of banned calcium carbide, FSSAI has permitted the use of ethylene gas as a safer alternative for fruit ripening in India

Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)

- Historical Context:
β Dhebar Commission (1973) introduced the category of Primitive Tribe, renamed to PVTG in 2006.
