Journalists and Government Communicators in jigjiga receive training

TE has organized a training focusing on how to conduct and give effective interview to Journalists from various media houses and government communicators (Public relations officers) from several government institutions at the capital of the Somali region. A group of high level journalists and government communicators participated during the training workshop.
The general purpose of the training was to contribute to the development of a smooth relationship between the two important categories of professionals and also equip them to conduct and give effective interviews.
Ato Yehualaw Tadesse, Transparency Ethiopia representative, delivered an opening speech where he welcomed the participants and briefly explained the purpose of the event. Ato Yehualaw opened the floor to Shambel Binalfew Alem and Bishar Mohammed Hussien, both lecturers at the Department of Journalism and Communication at Jigjiga University who provided theoretical training during the first half of the session to the journalists and the PR officers respectively. The second half was devoted to practical session which brought together both professionals. The participants, noted the importance of the platform and thanked TE for taking such an initiative. They also underlined the need for similar workshops in the future.

A Roundtable discussion held on media-CSO cooperation in the fight against corruption

TE has organized the fourth roundtable discussion with the objective of enhancing the cooperation between journalists and other media personnel in the fight against corruption and promotion of good governance. The roundtable which was held in August 19 at Harmony Hotel Addis Ababa drew notable journalists and media personnel from both government and private owned TV, radio and print media.
Ato Samuel Kassahun, Executive Director of Transparency International Ethiopia welcomed the participants and informed them that this is the fourth round table discussion/training organized by TE for journalists and media personnel on different topics. As he underlined the importance of cooperation between journalists and CSOs in fighting the ill of corruption and mal-adminstration, Ato Samuel emphasized the overlapping roles played by both media and CSOs towards the goal of promoting good governance and fighting corruption. In his brief opening speech, Ato Samuel took the time to explain to participants the danger posed by corruption and the dire need to fight it as systemic and pervasive corruption is plaguing the country more than ever.
Dr.Mulatu Alemayehu, a prominent trainer and assistant professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Addis Ababa University , made a presentation on the context of CSOs and media in Ethiopia, and presented approaches for both categories to effectively work together to tackle corruption. Dr. Mulatu later opened the platform for a guided discussion which was concluded by group presentations. Dr.Mulatu wrapped up his presentation by indicating the way forward regarding media-CSO cooperation on exposing and addressing the problem of corruption.
Durin his concluding remark, Ato Samuel Kassahun pleaded with the participants to come one step further in understanding the CSO sector and reaching out to work with them in carrying out their mandates particularly in the fight against corruption.
