اشتباه رایج (scarce vs. rare)

🧑🏻‍🏫 برای چیزهایی که تعداد کمی از آن‌ها وجود دارد از کلمه‌ی rare استفاده می‌شود:
✔️ Rare coins are usually worth a lot of money.
برای رویداد‌هایی کخ خیلی کم رخ می‌دهند هم از کلمه‌ی rare استفاده می‌شود:
✔️ I was lucky enough to witness one of her rare public appearances.


☠️ برای توصیف چیزهایی که معمولاً رایج هستند اما به دلایلی در زمانی/مکانی خاص بدست آوردنشان دشوار باشد، از کلمه‌ی scarce استفاده می‌شود:
✔️ After the war, food and clothing were scarce.

✍️ واژه‌ی people اگر به معنی "قوم، نژاد یا مردم یک ملت" باشد، اسم مفرد قابل شمارش است و میتواند a بگیرد یا بصورت جمع بکار برود:
a people = a race
• His dream is that the peoples of the world will one day unite.
آرزویش این است که اقوام/نژادها/ملت‌های دنیا یک روز متحد شوند.

✍️ اما people در صورتی که به معنی "مردم" بطور کلی باشد (زنان، مردان، کودکان)، حالت جمع دارد و همراه با a یا s جمع استفاده نمی‌شود.
people (plural noun) = men, women and children
• He finds it difficult to get along with people.
برای او کنار آمدن با مردم دشوار است.

این عبارت خیلی شبیه let alone هست و میشه بصورت "چه برسه به اینکه" ترجمش کنیم:

✅ John couldn't even pick up the box, much less carry it upstairs.

👨‍🏫 یکی از اصطلاحات قشنگی که در ریدینگ‌های تافل بکار رفته:

be second only to sth (=used to emphasize that sth is nearly the largest, most important etc)
یعنی فقط یه چیز/مورد/.... نسبت به چیز/مورد/...گفته شده بزرگتر/مهمتر/... است

✅ The euro will have a circulation second only to that of the dollar.
گردش یورو بعد از دلار در جایگاه دوم قرار دارد. (= فقط دلار گردش بیشتری نسبت به یورو دارد)
✍ That of = the circulation of

مثال در TPO 15:
✅ Glaciers are part of Earth's hydrologic cycle and are second only to the oceans in the total amount of water contained.
یخچال‌ها بخشی از چرخه‌ی آب زمین هستند و از نظر میزان آب ذخیره‌ شده، فقط اقیانوس‌ها حاوی آب بیشتری (نسبت به یخچال‌ها) هستند.
