πŸ”†What is ZiG?

βœ…Recently, to address its long-standing economic instability, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has launched a new gold-backed currency called the ZiG.

βœ…The Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) is a new gold-backed currency launched by Zimbabwe.

βœ…The ZiG, now the sixth currency used by Zimbabwe, has been in circulation since April 5, 2024.

πŸ“Reasons for launching a new currency

βœ…Zimbabwe has grappled with high inflation, with rates surpassing 500% in recent years.

βœ…Consequently, the Zimbabwean dollar, introduced in 1980, lost its value due to Following this, the country relied on various currencies, primarily the US dollar, leading to limited control over its economy.

βœ…The collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar in 2009, with hyperinflation peaking at 5 billion per cent, marked one of the most severe currency crashes in history.

βœ…Banks in Zimbabwe have been converting the previous national currency, the Zimbabwe dollar, into ZiGs, aiming to promote simplicity, certainty, and predictability in monetary and financial matters.

πŸ”†Alleged use of white phosphorous in Lebanon by Israel

πŸ“Why in news?
βœ…A global human rights group has claimed that Israel used white phosphorus incendiary shells on homes in at least five towns and villages in conflict-affected southern Lebanon.
βœ…Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported no evidence of burn injuries from white phosphorus in Lebanon but noted possible respiratory damage. Human rights advocates argue that using these munitions in populated areas is a crime under international law.
βœ…Israel claims it uses white phosphorus only as a smokescreen, not to target civilians.
βœ…In October 2023, Israel was accused of using white phosphorus in residential areas. This occurred shortly after clashes began between the Israeli military and Hezbollah along the southern Lebanon-Israel border, following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.
