Dalhousie wanted to build railways and highways to facilitate further loot of India. For that, he started railway construction, created PWD, encouraged canal irrigation etc and in the process, laid the foundation of modern civil engineering in India.

The three oldest civil engineering colleges in India - at Ranchi, Guindy and Pune (North, South and Centre) were all built to create skilled manpower for the very purpose in 1850s and 1860s. College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) was one of the three. And Sir Visvevaraya was a product of that.

However, today we can definitely say that Visvesvaraya's contribution to constructing India was much more constructive than that of Dalhousie, whose system had created Visvesvaraya in the first place.

Even though I am separated by Sir Visvevaraya by one and half century, the remote connection we share due to being the alumni of the same college, CoEP, is a good enough reason to feel happy about.
