💭Set in the 1920s, The Sun Also Rises is about a group of directionless expatriates who peregrinate across Europe in a hopeless search for contentment. They spend money recklessly, drink astonishing amounts of alcohol, indulge in era-representative racism/sexism, and rarely get anything useful done.

💭Analysis and interpretationThe Sun Also Rises captures the existential disillusionment characteristic of the Lost Generation. Its main characters—Jake, Brett, and their acquaintances—are mentally, emotionally, and morally lost. Their lives lack meaningful foundations and their romantic attachments are fleeting.

💭The ebb and flow of life is the only constant. Thus, they must keep trying as hard as they did when they were fighting in the war. There is no time for looking back, as Jake references at the end of the novel.

💭The irony in The Sun Also Rises is a “refractive” sort conducive to the fact that Jake can be alternately ambiguous and plainly negative about the worth of himself, his friends, and most other people. Jake's elusiveness, his ambiguity, is also a measure of his artistry and aspirations of control.

💭Water. Throughout the novel, many of the characters refer to their need to bathe, or find themselves near water. These comments may initially come across as offhanded or unremarkable, but they actually reflect an inherent desire to wash away the darkness that plagues their bleak lives.

Jake loses numerous friendships and has his life repeatedly disrupted because of his loyalty to Brett, who has a destructive series of love affairs with other men.

💭In the end, The Sun Also Rises was a (barely) fictionalized account of the events that had gone down in Pamplona. Donald Stewart, who appeared in the book's pages as "Bill Gorton," was astonished that Hemingway was even passing it off as fiction: it was, in Stewart's opinion, "nothing but a report on what happened...

In short, it is about a woman who comes to live with her sister and her sister's husband. She eventually loses her grip on reality as she fails to get what it is she most desires.

💭A Streetcar Named Desire enfolded all the anxieties of the era in its story of perverse gentility colliding with the earthy truths of the working class. Most emblematic of these was sex, for Streetcar is not about "sexuality" - it is about sex.

💭The central conflict in A Streetcar Named Desire occurs between two people representing disparate social backgrounds, incompatible natures, and opposing approaches to life. Blanche DuBois is a descendent of an aristocratic, decadent family of plantation-owners, and she is sensitive, cultured, and devoted to manners and appearances. Her antagonist, Stanley Kowalski, is a “common” descendent of Polish immigrants, brutish, domineering, and carnal. In a larger sense, the major conflict occurs as Blanche, a self-proclaimed “soft” person, tries to survive as her resources—both tangible (money and family) and intangible (youth and beauty)—dwindle.
