Ephesians 2:8 - 9 NIV

[8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithβ€”and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godβ€” [9] not by works, so that no one can boast.

From today’s scripture we learn that we have been saved only by God’s grace through the faith we have in Jesus Christ as our Lord and saviour and the son of God. We learn that it is not by our good deeds that we are saved, but only by God’s grace which he gives because of his love for us. In Isaiah Chapter 64:6 we learn that even our righteousness is like a filthy rag before God. So no one should boast but be thankful that we have been saved by grace.

Matthew 15:19 - 20 NIV

[19] For out of the heart come evil thoughtsβ€”murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. [20] These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

We have all heard the saying cleanliness is next to Godliness. But we learn from this scripture that if we practice cleanliness on the outside(physically) but still harbour evil thoughts in our hearts then we are defiled, meaning made unclean in the sight of God. So as much as we try to be clean physically let’s also try to be clean in our heart.

Proverbs 13:10 NIV

[10] Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Strife can be defined as anger or bitter disagreement over an issue, in other words a conflict. From today’s scripture we learn that strife is caused by pride. So, when people get involved in a heated argument it is because their pride prevents them from stepping away from the argument to create peace. The bible verse goes further to say,” but wisdom is found in those who take advice”. So rather than arguing be wise and take whatever the others have said into consideration and analyse the situation before taking any further step. Rather than arguing, deliberate on the issue.

Colossians 3:17 NIV
[17] And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

From today’s reading we learn that in everything we do, we should do it as representatives of Jesus Christ. So, be it our occupation, academics, hobbies, chores or whatever, we should do it in the name of our Jesus Christ. How can we do it in the name of Jesus Christ? We should do it without grumbling, wholeheartedly, diligently, and with patience, knowing that we are doing it to glorify our Lord. This is a way of showing our gratitude to God.

1 Corinthians 8:7 - 8 NIV

[7] But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. [8] But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

From this scripture we learn that our ignorance can make us unnecessarily concerned about everything that we do. For example there are some Christians that don’t eat pork not because of their health but because of religious purposes. They do not have any justifiable reason, but just because they’ve heard something from somewhere. When they mistakenly eat pork somewhere, they feel like they have sinned. But from today’s reading we learn that food has no impact on our relationship with God. This is just one example but there are many more like this. So, we must learn to know God for ourselves by reading the bible and not following every doctrine that comes our way.

Isaiah 40:31 KJV

[31] but they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

From today’s reading we learn that those who put their trust in God shall have renewed strength. So when you are going through a problem, or a very difficult situation, just put your trust in God that He is with you and He won’t forsake you. The Lord is faithful and He would give you the strength and wisdom to overcome any situation. You shall mount up with wings as eagles; you shall run, and not be weary; you shall walk, and not faint, because the Lord is with you.

James 3:13 NIV

[13] Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

From this scripture we learn that if you want to know if someone is really wise, you can know by his deeds. We learn that living a good life and humility are characteristics of a wise and understanding person. We must learn to live good and humble lives as it is a step towards wisdom.

James 3:17 NIV

[17] But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Yesterday we learnt about how good deeds and humility show that a person is wise and of understanding. From today’s scripture we learn about the wisdom that comes from heaven. The bible describes it as pure, peace-loving, considerate etc. We must pray for such wisdom as it is a guide to righteousness.
