SIGNIFICANCE OF WORSHIPPING AN ATMA-GYANI

Whatever worlds [realms] he covets by his mind, and whatever objects he, the man of pure mind wishes, he gains those worlds and those objects. Therefore, let him who longs for such desires worship him [the realised one] who knows the atman.

[The above verse indicates that worshipping the realised being, with certain desires in mind, fulfills those desires]

He [the realised one] knows the highest Brahman, the place where all this universe rests, and which shines with clear brightness. The intelligent, who, free from all [worldly] desire, worship this [realised] man, go beyond this seed [of samsara].

[The above verse indicates that worshipping the realised being, with no desires in mind, makes one liberated from samsara]

Whenever the mind becomes distracted, recollect it and turn it back within. Do this repeatedly and make it a habit. Eventually, the day will dawn when mind won't wander compulsively at all and become still in its source. That's the day when your true glory will be revealed to you.

WHAT IS VEDANTA?

Vedānta¹ is the evidence² of the Upaniṣads, as well as the Śārīraka Sūtras³ and other books⁴ that help in the correct expounding of its meaning.

VedāntaIt literally means the concluding, or the philosophical, portion of the Vedas.

EvidenceThe Sanskrit word Pramāṇa literally means the instrument of Pramā or Knowledge. The Vedānta philosophy acknowledges the following six classes of evidence: (a) Pratyakṣa (Direct Perception), (b) Anumāna (Inference), (c) Upamāna (Analogy), (d) Śabda (Scriptural Statement), (e) Arthāpatti (Presumption), (f) Anupalabdhi (Non-apprehension). The evidence furnished by the Upaniṣads falls under the Śabda Pramāṇa.

Śārīraka SūtrasLiterally the words signify the body aphorisms by Bādarāyaṇa which rightly determine the nature of the “embodied Self”.

Other booksThe commentaries on the Upaniṣads and the Gītā, etc.

Don't mind the discomforts. Realisation must stand amidst all the turmoils of life. Don't seek comfort all the time, for it will make you crippled. Face the troubles, let what comes come, but keep yourself steady in your meditation. Endeavor to maintain your inner peace and tranquillity in all the walks of life.

🌿This world is your best teacher. There is a lesson in everything. There is a lesson in each experience. Learn it and become wise. Every failure is a stepping stone to success. Every difficulty or disappointment is a trial of your faith. Every unpleasant incident or temptation is a test of your inner strength. Therefore nil desperandum. March forward hero!

🌿O Man! Be ever prepared. Live this moment as though it is your last moment on this earth and acquire the maximum spiritual wealth here and now.

Seeing the prompt destruction of [non-righteous] Adharmis and sinners, one should not indulge his mind in wrongful tactics, even if, following the path of one's [righteous] Dharma is painful.

[At times] Adharmic [unethical or unrighteous] actions do not produce their results immediately, just as a cow does not produce [a calf] instantly. However, when the time comes, these actions destroy their doer from their basic foundation.

🌿He who wears unclean garments, has dirty teeth, is a glutton, speaks unkindly and sleeps after sunrise - although he may be the greatest personality - will lose the favour of Lakshmi.

🌿What good is a cow that neither gives milk nor conceives? Similarly, what is the value of the birth of a son if he becomes neither learned nor a pure devotee of the Lord?

🌿The hand is not so well adorned by ornaments as by charitable offerings; one does not become clean by smearing sandalwood paste upon the body as by taking a bath; one does not become so much satisfied by dinner as by having respect shown to him; and salvation is not attained by self-adornment but by cultivation of spiritual knowledge.

The Yaksha asked—“What is the highest duty in the world? What is that virtue which always beareth fruit? What is that which if controlled, leadeth not to regret? And who are they with whom an alliance cannot break?”

Yudhishthira answered— “The highest of duties is to refrain from injury: the rites ordained in the Vedas always bear fruit: the mind, if controlled, leads to no regret: and an alliance with the good never breaks.”

The Yaksha asked—“What is that which, if renounced, makes one agreeable? What is that which, if renounced, leads to no regret? What is that which, if renounced, makes one wealthy? And what is that which if renounced, makes one happy?”

Yudhishthira answered—“Pride, if renounced, makes one agreeable; wrath, if renounced leads to no regret; desire, if renounced, makes one wealthy; and avarice, if renounced, makes one happy.

Because one fails to control and conquer one's mind, this tendency and urge to control and conquer others arises. Even the most powerful beings of the cosmos, may conquer everything else, yet they fail miserably when it comes to controlling the mind. Only the ones that have won their minds and risen beyond it, are the ones that truly know Me. They're indeed the rarest of the rare.

Question: When my mind wanders during meditation, in spite of my attempts to control it, should I give it up?

Bhagavan: One need not abandon meditation, thinking that it is the nature of the mind to wander. Whatever one practices becomes swabhava [one's nature]. If control is practiced persistently, that will become natural.
