πFSSAI Alerts Fruit Traders to Ensure Compliance with Prohibition of Calcium Carbide in Fruit Ripening
β Calcium carbide, commonly used for ripening fruits like mangoes, releases acetylene gas which contains harmful traces of arsenic and phosphorus.
β These substances, also known as βMasalaβ, can cause serious health issues such as dizziness, frequent thirst, irritation, weakness, difficulty in swallowing, vomiting and skin ulcers, etc. Additionally, acetylene gas is equally hazardous to those handling it.
β There are chances that calcium carbide may come in direct contact with fruits during application and leave residues of arsenic and phosphorus on fruits.
β Due to these dangers, the use of calcium carbide for ripening fruits has been banned under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011
β Considering the issue of rampant use of banned calcium carbide, FSSAI has permitted the use of ethylene gas as a safer alternative for fruit ripening in India

Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)
β Some tribes are identified as PVTGs due to their higher vulnerability among tribal groups, previously classified as primitive tribal groups.
β Total Groups: 76 tribal groups designated as Special Backward Tribes by the Government of India. Odisha highest number of PVTGs
Most Vulnerable Groups:
β Shompen
β Sentinelese
β Jarawas of Andaman and Nicobar
β Bonda of Odisha
β Chola Naikkan of Kerala

β PVTGs have some basic characteristics - they are mostly homogenous, with a small
population, relatively physically isolated, social institutes cast in a simple mould, absence of written language, relatively simple technology and a slower rate of change etc.
β The Government of India follows the following criteria for identification of PVTGs:
i. Pre-agricultural level of technology
ii. Low level of literacy
iii. Economic backwardness
iv. A declining or stagnant population
- Historical Context:
β Dhebar Commission (1973) introduced the category of Primitive Tribe, renamed to PVTG in 2006.
β Forest Rights Law grants habitat area rights to these tribes by the Central Government.
β In 2003, a committee chaired by Professor Virginia Xaxa advocated for PVTG habitat rights, based on the recommendation of the Student Task Force.

π Paika Rebellion
β The Paikas of Odisha were the landed militia (βfoot soldiersβ literally) who were involved in performing policing functions for the Gajapati rulers.
β The kingdom of Khurda had granted them rent-free land for the military services that they offered to the kingdom.
β Paika Rebellion of 1817 is an armed revolt against the British by the Paikas of Khurda in Odisha.
β The rebellion took form and shape under the leadership of Baxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhara.
β Soon after taking over Odisha from the Marathas in 1803, the British started to introduce a system of administration that angered the King of Khurda, Mukunda Deva II.
β Many other activities of the British like the introduction of a new currency system, oppression of the Paikas in the hands of the officials of the company, ban on making salt from seawater gave rise to widespread dissatisfaction and hatred against the British.
β The king planned revolt against British in collaboration with the Paikas.
β The revolt enjoyed a great level of support from the Kings of Nayagarh, Kujang, Kanika, Village headmen,
peasants and zamindars.
β Initially, the Paikas seemed to have gotten hold of the battle and saw some victory, but was suppressed by the British in just three months.
β Some Paikas however, fought guerilla warfare against the British yet the revolt was completely suppressed by 1819.
β Therefore, it lasted for a year and a half before being ruthlessly suppressed by the British East India Companyβs forces.
β The result of the Paika Rebellion was disheartening as the rebels involved were awarded sentences of death, long-term imprisonment.
β A commission was appointed by the British officials to enquire into the rebellion.
β There were severe uprisings post this Paika rebellion initiated by people from Kandha & Koi region.
β The major issue that prevailed post the Paika rebellion was the revenue policy which didnβt undergo any change.
