Joao Ferreira wins Baja TT Dehesa Extremadura

The two Portuguese drivers Joao Ferreira and Filipe Palmeiro are still on the road to success in the MINI JCW Rally Plus. Following their second place in the BP Ultimate Rally Raid Portugal, they secured victory in the Baja TT Dehesa Extremadura. The rally, which was held in the Spanish border region with Portugal, was the first event of the FIA European Baja Cup.

On the first day, Ferreira and Palmeiro kept a low profile and did not take any risks. With second place in the prologue and sixth place on the first special stage, they finished the day in sixth place overall. But yesterday, Saturday, the pair went on the attack in the MINI JCW Rally Plus. Despite a puncture on the second stage, they set the fastest time and also took the lead in the overall standings. Later, they also secured victory in the third and final special stage and won the Baja with a lead of almost four and a half minutes.

Maria Luis Gameiro and José Marques achieved a very good tenth place overall in the MINI JCW Rally Plus. The two Portuguese drivers competed together with the X-raid partner team MRacing Portugal.

  Quotes from the drivers
Joao Ferreira (MINI JCW Rally Plus):
‘That was a nice rally, but also tough. Especially Friday, as I was a bit ill. Everything worked very well on Saturday. We not only won the two stages, but also the rally and scored important points for the championship. The MINI was super and very reliable. Thanks to X-raid for the support.’

🎤What can I say about my weekend at Baja TT Extremadura, the round 2 of FIM Bajas World Cup... started off with a decent start of the race with minor issues with navigation but we were still in a good position in the championship by the end of day one... day 2 was a complete chaos with a major error in the road book which cost us more than 10 minutes at the start of the second part of the stage... started attacking, riding well over my head trying to make up lost time, had a few crashes along the way and luckily we made up all the time back. Only when about to think we made it, the bike broke down 12 km before the finish of a stage of 344 km and that was that. So I started pushing my bike to the finish line and when I thought I couldn't push anymore Pedro Pinheiro came to the rescue and towed my bike to the finish line. Can't thank him enough.
FIA European Baja Cup 2024, Round 1: provisional point standing

By Stephan Wolf

With the recent changes to the FIA Cross-Country Rally Sporting Regulations, post-race scoring has become a complicated task — especially in the FIA World Baja Cup and FIA Regional Baja Cups (Europe, Middle East). An additional factor of difficulty was the coefficients depending on the number of registered participants in a category.

There is no official FIA European Baja Cup classification after the recent Baja TT Dehesa Extremadura yet, so we decided to do our own scoring.

Stefano Marrini won the Baja Colline Metallifere, the second round of the Italian Championship in T4 Category and shared his impressions about the race with Cross-Country Rally News.

🎤The second round of the Italian championship was really tough with rough off-road stages, full of stones and steps. The big challenge was dealing with water and mud, especially for SSVs.

The stages were split into two different directions. SS1/4 proved tougher, while SS1 2/3 were a bit easier due to less mud and water. Navigation wasn't as tricky as in the desert.

Winning this race in the T4 category didn't feel too hard for me because my competitors made mistakes on SS1. I managed to drive perfectly on that stage— not speeding, but navigating without errors through the mud, rivers, and stones. From there, I just drove and kept my advantage.

The second round was organized in a perfect way by the R-Team guys. I would like to thank my co-driver Giovanni Squarcialupi, mechanic, and all the sponsors that supported me in the 2024 season.

❓️Navigator or co-driver?

Small survey for everyone

What do you think, in all FIA Cross-Country Rally regulations the person sitting in the right side of the driver, is called co-driver like in regular rally.
But, he/she is not calling pace notes about the road previously checked like in regular rally, by his function he is navigating the crew from one point to another, without knowing the road.

❓️Do you think that it could be better to name him/her in FIA documents, regulations, etc… Navigator instead of Co-driver?
