Transparency Ethiopia (TE) is concerned about unlawful detentions of journalists and other members of society

June/07/2022

A free, independent, pluralistic and objective media is an essential component of any democratic society as it informs the public to make responsible, informed decisions, and performs a “checking function” ensuring that elected officials live up to their responsibilities. The media has an important role in the fight against corruption as the media can demand accountability and transparency from the public and private sectors. The media provides information on public sector corruption where governmental activity is opaque. Journalists, particularly through investigative journalism, play a crucial role in exposing corruption to public scrutiny and fighting against impunity. Taking into account this monumental role of the media, TE has long identified the media as a vital stakeholder and has been working to empower media personnel though various means.

Cognizant of the monumental role of the media in the fight against corruption and in the overall democratization process, TE is concerned over the increasing number of journalists unlawfully detained over the past few weeks. We have learnt from multiple sources (Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ethiopian Human Rights Council and Committee to Protect Journalists) that not less than 16 journalists have been unlawfully detained to date. This is contrary to the Media Law and the leadership’s publicly stated commitment to safeguard and promote freedom of expression, and ensure media space.

We are alarmed by news of: pre-trial detentions, arbitrary arrests, mistreatment of the arrested and incommunicado detentions contrary to the Country’s laws. Unless immediate corrective measures are taken, the ongoing arbitrary arrests of journalists, social activists, political party members/leaders, public figures and other members of society would critically narrow the political space.

Transparency Ethiopia calls for caution and restraint as the government carries out what it has termed as ‘law enforcement measures’. We call that law enforcement bodies responsible for rights violations are held accountable and those under detention are treated fairly in a manner that ensures due process of the law.
