دو عبارت despite و in spite of نقش حرف اضافه (preposition) دارند. بنابراین بعد از ان دو مورد باید از فریز (نه یک کلاز) استفاده کنیم.
نکته 1: despite بدون حرف اضافه‌ی of بکار می‌رود (اشتباه بسیار رایج):

علیرغم گرما، او کتش را درنمی‌آورد.

دو عبارت despite و in spite of حرف اضافه (preposition) هستند؛ بنابراین پس از آنها از کلاز مستقل استفاده نمی‌شود، بلکه یک گروه اسمی (noun phrase) یا فعلی که ing گرفته استفاده می‌شود. وقتی لازم باشد از یک کلاز مستقل (independent clause) استفاده کنیم، باید Although/Even though/Though ( که نقش حرف ربط یا همان conjunction دارند) بکار ببریم:
✅ In spite of owning two cars, he can't drive.
علیرغم داشتن دو ماشین، نمی‌تواند رانندگی کند. (in spite of + verb + ing)

Dead to the world above ground—withered and crisp—the plants live frugally below the surface, drawing on their cached supplies and biding their time until the weather improves. 👨🏫 این جمله چجوری نوشته شده؟ میتونید ترجمش کنید؟
✍ این جمله رو میشه اینجوری بازنویسی کرد:
The plants, which are dead to the world above ground, withered and crisp, live frugally below the surface, drawing on their cached supplies
قسمت اول یدونه non-restrictive adjective clause داشته که بعد از انجام ریداکشن (حذف which are)، به اول جمله منتقل شده
قسمت دوم جمله ساختار IC, doing sth داره که خیلی پرکاربرد هست (drawing on...). مثال:
Japan has the most advanced high-speed train system, boasting trains that can reach speeds of over 300 km/h.
But Hales went further, addressing chemical as well as physiological questions (TPO 65).
👨🏫 این ساختار لزوماً با ریداکشن which ایجاد نمیشه.

قسمت دوم جمله ساختار IC, doing sth داره که خیلی پرکاربرد هست (drawing on...). مثال:

بررسی چند اشتباه رایج (بخصوص در متن SOPها—بخش اول):
1️⃣ برای مدرک تحصیلی کارشناسی یا کارشناسی ارشد، از کلمه‌ی Master’s/Bachelor's استفاده می‌شود (همراه با آپستروف s):
✔️ a Master's degree = a Master's

این امر/مسئله/موضوع یعنی...

تکنولوژی کامپیوتر دائماً در حال بهبود یافتن است. این امر یعنی کامپیوتری که تازه خریدی احتمالاً در مدت چند ماه قدیمی می‌شود.
نکته 1: این ساختار در ابتدای جمله استفاده می‌شود.

که این امر/مسئله/موضوع یعنی...
• There is a shortage of hospital doctors, which means that patients often have to wait a long time for treatment.
کمبود دکتر در بیمارستان وجود دارد، که این امر یعنی مریض‌ها معمولاً باید زمان زیادی برای درمان منتظر بمانند.
نکته 2: قبل از این ساختار کاما بکار می‌رود.

• Her son suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. That is, he finds it difficult to pay attention or stay quiet for more than a short period of time.
4. in other words
به بیان/زبان دیگر
• Average incomes fell, while the incomes of the top 20 percent of the population
increased. In other words, the rich got richer.
میانگین درآمد پایین آمد، در حالی که درآمد 20 درصدِ بالای جمعیت افزایش یافت. به بیان دیگر، پولدارها، پولدارتر شدند.
5. to put it another way
به بیان/زبان دیگر
• Using this software would offer a 15% saving in space. To put it another way, this will mean an extra 12Gb free on an 80Gb disk.
استفاده کردن از این نرم‌افزار سبب 15% صرفه‌جویی در فضا می‌شود. به زبان دیگر، این یعنی 12 گیگابایتِ اضافه در یک دیسک 80 گیگابایتی.
6. to put it simply
به بیان/زبان ساده‌تر
• What the treatment aims to do, to put it simply, is to make the skin grow back over the wound.

• A romantic novel should demand a certain level of emotional involvement on the part of the reader. To put it simply, the novel should not just describe a love relationship; it should allow the reader to participate in it.
