If Britain and her beautiful pubs do, in fact, have an equal, then I am yet to come across it.

When discussing the hardships of the past (such as the industrial revolution) or the ugliness of modernity, people will use dismissive, non-arguments to suggest that things were once worse in one way or another. Even if they were correct (which is rare) it's like saying "well, at least this punch in the face wasn't as bad as that punch in the face" instead of admitting that we should have simply made the effort to fix what we had as opposed to using neglect, persecution, suffering and the false notion of "wealth" as an excuse to create a miserable world of hypermodernisation. Wealth entirely depends on the prosperity and happiness of the people within any said nation. Without it, so-called "riches" and tacky trinkets mean nothing. This is why I often say that "progress" has been cunningly turned into what I now consider, a dirty word.
