🔆The Kursk gambit

Ukraine launched a surprise attack into the Kursk region of Russia, capturing several hundred Russian soldiers in a bold and risky move led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Pokrovsk, a critical logistics hub in Eastern Ukraine, is under siege by Russian forces. Ukrainian forces are being ordered to withdraw, paving the way for Russia to capture the entire Donetsk region.

Ukraine's offensive into Kursk stands out as no country has invaded any part of Russia since Hitler’s Germany. This operation was prepared in secrecy and aimed at forcing Russia to redeploy its forces.

Despite Ukrainian gains in Kursk, Russia retains the advantage in overall territorial control, particularly in Eastern Ukraine where it controls approximately 100,000 square kilometers.

Ukraine's incursion is partially intended to signal its capability to its western allies, ensuring continued support.

🔆PM's Visit to Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and emphasized India's commitment to peace.

The meeting marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991, resulting in the signing of four agreements related to humanitarian aid, agriculture, cultural cooperation, and drug regulation.

Modi emphasized that India is not neutral and has chosen the side of peace, underlining India's commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries.

India's focus remains on peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, and it participated in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, in June.

August 1, 2024, marked the 97th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The Southern and Northern Theaters of the PLA witnessed a change in commanders, with General Wu Yanan and General Huang Ming taking charge.

China has been embroiled in skirmishes with the Philippines in the South China Sea, drawing critique from regional powers such as Japan and the United States. President Xi Jinping has emphasized transforming the PLA into a 'world-class' military.

The PLA’s reforms initiated in 2015 aimed at achieving flawless interoperability and wartime mobilization. Developments in the Southern Theater have highlighted the fault lines in these reform visions.

General Wu Yanan’s appointment is seen as part of the Chinese Communist Party’s reform agenda

From India’s perspective, understanding the leadership changes in the PLA is crucial. India must study the doctrinal evolution of reforms in the PLA, as China is its principal rival and most significant military challenger.
