🔆The External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar is in Cape Town (South Africa) to attend a meeting of the foreign ministers (FM) of BRICS - a grouping comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The FMs’ meeting will finalise the agenda for the 15th BRICS (South Africa) scheduled with the theme: “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism”.

While India’s presence at the G7 summit in Hiroshima and an informal Quad summit was seen as a sign of New Delhi’s US tilt, it attaches significant importance to the BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

India called on BRICS nations to demonstrate their sincerity in reforming multilateral institutions, including that of the UN Security Council.

However, one view on the expanding membership is that it could sideline India’s role in the group.

🔆Celebration of Indira Gandhi's killing in Canada

Why in news?

A massive controversy has erupted over a social media video of a parade float depicting late prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassination in Canada.
In 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, months after the military operation called the Operation Bluestar.
The parade was allegedly organised by pro-Khalistani supporters on June 4, days before the 39th anniversary of ‘Operation Bluestar’ (celebrated on June
6).

📍India's response

The Indian high commission in Ottawa sent a note expressing displeasure to Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian foreign ministry.
One cannot exceed freedom of expression like this, glorifying the assassination of the leader of a democratic nation.
India warned Canada that giving space to separatists, extremists was not good for bilateral ties.

🔆A pragmatic approach for better India Nepal ties

Nepal’s democracy, governance, and stability face numerous challenges, along with persistent bilateral irritants with India.

However, the recent bilateral visit of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda to India has highlighted the potential of a pragmatic approach and mutual sensitivity in re-energizing the relationship between the two nations.

India-Nepal ties have been viewed primarily from a political lens. Prachanda’s visit has instead emphasised the economic aspects of the relationship.
