๐ Mineral Security Partnership
โ Mineral Security Partnership
India was recently inducted into the Mineral Security Partnership (MSP).
โ It is an ambitious new initiative to bolster critical mineral supply chains, announced by the United States (US) and key partner countries in June 2022.
โ The goal of the alliance is to ensure that critical minerals are produced, processed, and recycled in a manner that supports the ability of countries to realise the full economic development benefit of their geological endowments.
โ The focus of the grouping would be on the supply chains of minerals such as Cobalt, Nickel, Lithium and also the 17 โrare earthโ minerals.
โช๏ธWhat is a critical mineral?
โ There is no global definition of critical minerals, but essentially, they are mineral deposits with high economic vulnerability and high global supply chain risk.
โช๏ธWhat are major critical minerals?
โ The major critical minerals are Graphite, Lithium and Cobalt.
โ They are used for making EV batteries and are also critical for making semiconductors and high-end electronics manufacturing.
โ These minerals are also used in manufacturing fighter jets, drones, radio sets and other critical equipment.
โช๏ธWho are the top producers of critical minerals?
โ The major producers of critical minerals globally are Chile, Indonesia, Congo, China, Australia and South Africa.
โช๏ธWhat are rare earth elements?
โ The 17 rare earth elements (REE) include the 15 Lanthanides (atomic numbers 57 which is Lanthanum to 71 in the periodic table) plus Scandium (atomic number 21) and Yttrium (39).

๐Upholders of strategic autonomy
India and france are neutral partners where multipolarity has become a reality and sovereign equality of nations an important principle
When France and India come together, commitment to this relationship based on shared values too comes into play.
Liberty involves nations enjoying freedom from being forced into taking sides and choosing what is in their national interest. It is called โstrategic autonomyโ. India has steadfastly upheld the principle in its relations with different countries.

๐Why has a single joint statement not been released so far ?
What is the bone of contention?
What are the โBali Paragraphsโ?
As G-20 President, what is Indiaโs focus?
โ The G20 Summit was held in the Bali island in November 2022 when Indonesia hosted the event under its presidentship. The Bali Declaration was a joint statement that came out at the end of the summit, summarising the commitments of the member countries towards the world and ways to resolve the issues at hand.
โ The Para 3 specifically holds the Ukraine conflict responsible for existing global economic fragilities, including increasing inflation, disruption in supply and chain and growing food and energy insecurity.
โ Para 4 of the Bali Declaration, meanwhile, focused more on the humanitarian side, usage of weapons and modes to resolve the conflict.
โ Both Russia and China were against its inclusion in the joint communique of the G20
