🔆 A new chapter in India-Africa ties can be written

There is a slow realisation that Africa, a continent, accounting for nearly 17% of the world’s population today and reaching 25% in 2050, needs to be studied closely.

Why? Because India’s rise as a global player is inevitably linked to the kind of partnership it enjoys with Africa.

🔆 What is China’s new law on foreign relations?

The law involves foreign affairs, and as the very first article puts it, it was drafted to “safeguard China’s sovereignty, national security and development interests”. Explaining the need for the law, an unnamed official of the National People’s Congress (NPC) told state media the “legal system concerning foreign affairs still has some shortcomings” and “gaps exist in laws safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests.”
The official said that “speeding up the building of the legal system concerning foreign affairs will help China more effectively deal with risks and challenges.”

🔆The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Heads of State

India will chair the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Heads of State (SCO-CHS) for the first time today.

At the SCO Summit in Samarkand in September 2022, India took over the chairmanship of the SCO for the first time from Uzbekistan.

The major issues that are expected to be on the agenda include terrorism, regional security and prosperity.

The theme of India's chairship of SCO- SECURE.
SECURE is derived from the acronym coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2018 SCO Qingdao Summit.

It stands for S: Security, E: Economic development, C: Connectivity, U: Unity, R: Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, E: Environmental protection.

Iran is expected to be inducted as a member of the SCO, while the process for Belarus — a key ally of Russia — is under way and expected to be completed next year.
🔆Sobriety after the euphoria of the U.S. state visit

The euphoria stemming from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States in June is yet to subside. All of India continues to savour the images that marked this highly publicised visit. Those with long memories of U.S.-India relations in the past are, hence, left to wonder whether this is the same U.S. that had let India down in the past at crucial moments.

🔆 Sri Lanka counting on Indian tourists to bolster economic recovery

Sri Lanka is counting on tourists from India, its primary source market, to boost foreign exchange earnings and aid economic recovery, as the island expects fewer tourists from Europe amid the ongoing recession.
Colombo is currently hosting the 67th convention of the Travel Agents Association of India, in a bid to further boost Indian tourist arrivals in the coming years.

🔆What are cluster munitions? is using them a war crime

A cluster bomb is a type of weapon that is designed to disperse smaller bombs over a large area. They are also known as cluster munitions, with the smaller bombs referred to as submunitions or bomblets. A cluster bomb capsule is seen on the ground amid the Russia-Ukraine war in Avdiivka, Ukraine, on March 23, 2023.

While cluster munitions are not banned internationally, more than 120 countries – including most NATO members – have signed on to a convention prohibiting their use.

🔆The long rode to finding true peace in Yemen.

The recent prisoner swap between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen, which heralds an end to the eight-year-old Saudi-led war in Yemen, is unlikely to bring lasting peace in the country due to the complex web of global and regional stakeholders involved there, unless Yemen unifies and focuses its efforts on rescuing its millions of displaced and suffering citizens
