Hidden in the forests near the village of Želízy in Czechia, Čertovy hlavy (The Devil Heads) are two massive stone faces carved into a sandstone cliff. Created in the 1840s by self-taught sculptor Václav Levý, each head stands about 30 feet tall and stares eerily through the trees with hollow eyes.
These haunting sculptures are among the largest carved stone heads in the world, second only to Mount Rushmore. Part of the scenic Kokořínsko Protected Landscape, they remain a mysterious and lesser-known gem of Czech heritage, accessible by forest trail.

This drawing was done by Sally Chapman, aged 14, of what she witnessed in July of 1976. Chapman and her friend, Barbara Perry, saw what is known as the Owlman of Mawnan. Chapman and Perry were camping in Mawnan, England, at the time.
On the drawing is written: “I saw this monster bird last night. It stood like a man then it flew up through the trees. It is as big as a man. Its eyes are red and shine brightly.”
Perry described what she had seen in addition to what was written on Chapman’s drawing. She said, “It was horrible, a nasty owl-face with big ears and big red eyes. It was covered with grey feathers. The claws on its feet were black. It just flew up and disappeared in the trees.”
