I've suspected for some time now that there's some kind of algorithmic "tether" that restrains Twitter accounts like mine when they start to build up momentum. I can feel it whenever I've had a very good few days (tweets suddenly just don't land in the same way) but it's also unmistakeable in the analytics data Twitter provides.
