Living abroad: What to do on the first death anniversary of my mom

I lost my mom to cancer last year. I can't be in Kerala for the first shrardham and looking at ways to do the rituals here in North America. I live in a condo with wall to ceiling glass and no balcony. Doing the rituals at home is not an option. I live in the city and haven't seen any crows. I'm not religious and prefer spending the day doing charity. But my mom was religious and would have wanted me to do the rituals. I don't know anything about the rituals though. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No Illegal Religious Structures Should Be Allowed On Govt Lands, Encroachments By Religious Groups Would Lead To Disharmony: Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court has held that the construction of illegal religious structures and buildings in government lands by Hindus, Christians, Muslims or any other religion can not be permitted since that would lead to religious disharmony in the State.

The Court referred to the Preamble of the Constitution to state that religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution does not mean that citizens could encroach upon government land to construct religious structures and disrupt religious harmony.

The plea stated that several attempts were made by fanatic outfits to construct religious structures such as Temple, Thrishuls, to expand worship of a small idol in the property of the Plantation Corporation. The plea stated that there was law and order situation when the Plantation Corporation prevented construction of religious structures or encroachments by religious outfits.

The Court went on to state that God Is Omnipotent and present everywhere. It thus stated that believers need not encroach upon government lands to build illegal religious structures to offer worship. It stated that such government lands could be distributed to landless persons in the name of mankind which would make God happy.

Vattaparambil Valiyamma : A female ruler in Kerala

Before Kayamkulam was annexed to Travancore, it was an independent kingdom ruled by a king of Odanad. In this kingdom, a Nair family known as Vattaparambil resided near what is now the 'Puthiyadathu' temple. Members of this family held prominent positions, such as the king’s minister, royal arms instructor, and army leaders, and had marital ties to the royal family.

However, around M.E. 850, one branch of the Vattaparambil family fell out of favor with the king. Forced to leave the kingdom, they gathered a few troops and relocated near Keerikkadu, where they established a fort, a bastion, a house near the fort, and several temples. The other branches of the family, remaining loyal to the Kayamkulam king, stayed behind.

The branch that migrated to Keerikkadu lived independently, ignoring the authority of the neighboring Kayamkulam kingdom. The king of Kayamkulam, fearing a potential military rebellion due to the longstanding loyalty of his soldiers to the Vattaparambil family, did not dare to confront them. Over time, this branch grew unchecked into a Naduvazhi status, nominally subordinate to Venad. They played a crucial role in sheltering many members of the Venad royalty from feudal lords, barons, assassins, and enemy spies between M.E. 710 and 904.

One of the people they protected became the great king Marthanda Varma. In recognition of their contributions, the oldest woman in the Vattaparambil family was honored with the title “Valiyamma” or “elder aunt to the Travancore king.” Vattaparambil Valiyamma was also involved in the education of Travancore princes.

Many tales about this family are mentioned in Aithihyamala. One recounts how a Vattaparambil Valiyathan (a male member of the family) learned various mantravada techniques and defeated a paradesi sorcerer named Peethambaran who was causing trouble in the Travancore kingdom. The branches of the family that stayed in Kayamkulam went extinct after the kingdom was annexed by Marthanda Varma of Travancore. Meanwhile, the Vattaparambil branch in Keerikkadu still survives today, with all Valiyathans in Kerala descending from it.

Cost of living and expenses

Hi! I work outside of India and every year I take my annual vacation to Kerala. When ever I come, I see restaurants filled with people and delivery guys lining up to take food to customers, I see people in malls buying so much things and also filling food courts (I was not able to find a place to sit at the tvm lulu food court). In addition to this I see people buying a lot of electronics and home appliances as well.

I do the same thing on vacation because I have saved up money to come and spend. My parents tell me that prices of things are not as they were before and that things are quite expensive. The price of poultry and meats are crazy and also the cost of electricity and water I think were increased this year. And don’t get me started on petrol, the cost of one full tank in my celerio will get me 3 full tanks here.
Luxury cars are no longer being registered in pondi!😳

I am happy that people are able to do all this, but my question is, how are they able to afford all this?
- Are people getting paid much more than what was paid before?
- Are people using credit cards to fund these purchases (I got approached multiple times by SBI and I think bajaj credit card sales people in malls)?
- Is it cause a lot of people live in their own/parents houses that they don’t end up spending a big portion on rent?

I’m just looking to understand the financial situation of the average person working in Kerala.

Stay safe guys!
