Discrimination due to perceived notion of caste?

I belong to the protestant christian background(Church of South India). I studied in a Catholic school and obviously had a fair share of Roman Catholic friends. I did get close to a few of them and eventually our families also started interacting.One day, in one of the interactions something odd happened where my Catholic friend's parents asked my parents about the church I belong to and they said CSI. Their face sort of changed and I could sense a bit of disapproval in their face. The conversation though changed quickly with some other topic but I genuinely felt that they did dislike that when we said that. My assumptions became true when my friend asked me in school after a few days whether I was a converted christian from a 'lower caste'. That was a hurtful question and I sort of got in an argument with him regarding the question and I soon realized that his parents discussed about our case at home. Our friendship was no longer like before and our parents from then on had minimal interactions. I was also bullied by some other Catholic students in class who hurled casteist abuses at me due to their so called perceived notion of me being a lower caste as I come from a Protestant church.

Well the irony is that I myself have Nasrani lineage but I do realize that people generally have a perceived notion on us due to our protestant faith. I never personally cared or looked upon about my Nasrani lineage until I met up with people from my school who are so proud of it and like to claim that St Thomas baptized their family or they have this much acres of family land and rubber cause they are the so called Purathana Catholica Kristyanikal and such. Like geez, give it a break!
