“FIRST THEY BROKE LEGS, THEN THEY BASHED HEADS” ● An emergency care doctor told about the protesters who were beaten yesterday.

On November 8, over 1000 Belarusians were detained in Minsk. The media published many videos of people being beaten during the arrest or tortured later at the police precincts: some were standing outside near the wall with their hands raised for 8-11 hours. Emergency care doctors anonymously told “Belsat” about what happened at the Emergency Care Hospital after the protest has been dispersed and people have been arrested.

According to a doctor, most new patients had similar injuries - head trauma, broken legs, arms, ankles.

“Traumatologists helped us put casts on people because there were many comminuted and displaced fractures. People said that the siloviki first hit their legs - broke them to make a person fall, and then bashed their heads,” the doctor said.

The injured people told doctors that they were beaten during the arrest, in the vans, and in the police precincts. Ambulances took people from the precincts. But not everyone got help.

“People on duty said that there are many brutalized people. But the cops only let go of those who couldn’t stand up because of broken legs, who lost consciousness or was vomiting because of head trauma. Sometimes they told doctors to bandage people up and leave them in the precincts. There is no legal basis to let the doctors take someone from the police. They don’t let us take people, don’t let us examine them. They don’t even listen to the doctors.”

All the siloviki wore balaclavas and behaved rudely. “They don’t see the doctors as authority figures anymore. They look at us spitefully, talk rudely,” a doctor noted.

According to another doctor, 15 people were delivered to the Emergency Care Hospital. Three among them were young women, two were about 19-20, the third was barely older. They had head trauma as well as bruises on their breasts and stomachs. “In August, I witnessed the siloviki hitting the women in the stomachs and below, saying that they shouldn’t give birth to scum. This is genocide, there is no other way to call it. And now there are similar injuries.”

The patients’ parents and loved ones came to visit them. Some felt dizzy when they saw what the siloviki did to their children.

“I don’t understand what do these masked ones want to achieve. The parents spoke to me yesterday and said that they will go to the next protest instead of their children and they won’t run away,” a doctor said.

Late at night, people from jail at Akrescina began to trickle into the Emergency Care Hospital. They brought the last one at 5 AM: “This guy had a head trauma so severe, his retina could’ve detached. These guys came without guards, so after getting the treatment they could go home free and happy. This is similar to what happened in August.”

Sergei, another emergency care doctor, said that according to his colleagues from the admissions unit that many patients were brought in on the night of October 9.

“There were many people with serious injuries. Something similar happened in August. Understandably, people with explosive injuries would be taken to the military hospital, that’s their specialty. There were fractures - they hit the hands, broke fingers. Some people had their legs broken. There were concussions, blunt force traumas. I can only compare this to August, there were many injured people too, and we had to constantly examine, put casts, sew wounds,” Sergei said.

“IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE” ● Workers of Hrodna Azot told why two departments stopped working.

Yesterday, two departments of Hrodna Azot stopped working: Ammonia-4 and Carbamide-4. According to the state-owned media, the former stopped due to the “technological process issues”, and the latter had to stop because it can’t work without the former. “Salidarnasc” spoke to the workers and learned two most likely reasons for the stoppage.

“These two departments work in tandem. If Ammonia stops, Carbamide has to stop too because it uses the raw materials produced in Ammonia,” the workers said. “It is unknown, exactly which machine stopped working but even if it’s fixed, Ammonia can’t restart earlier than tomorrow, and then Carbamide could return to work too.”

But if this doesn’t happen, the production of Cyclohexanone will stop as well, the workers note.

“The situation is already very troubling. It requires that all the best-qualified specialists are present but due to the situation in the country, they have to leave their jobs. Equipment troubles are normal, every engineer does rounds during his shift to find all the issues as soon as possible. In the meantime, his colleague keeps watching the detector readings.”

Why was the problem at Ammonia-4 found so late or wasn’t fixed promptly? Most likely this is due to the fact that the plant is understaffed, while the management keeps firing “problematic” workers.

“The shifts have halved, and it takes at least a year to train a replacement: six months of obligatory internship plus six months of practical work. The higher-ups gave the management two orders which were made public several times: fire all the strikers and keep the plant running. This is an opportunity to test whether it is possible to execute these orders in reality. It isn’t. And it’s only going to get worse,” the strike committee of Hrodna Azot told.

Hrodna Azot was one of the first plants to join the nationwide strike. Several shifts at the Ammonia-3 and Carbamide-4 refused to work. Some strikers were fired and strikebreakers were brought in but, apparently, this didn’t solve the problem. Besides, more workers keep joining the strike.

Britain has expelled two Belarusian diplomats in response to the removal of two UK envoys from the former Soviet bloc country, the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, has said.

The move came after the British diplomats, including a defence attache, were ordered home from the capital, Minsk.

The British diplomats were expelled on Monday after Belarus objected to their observation of street protests in Minsk on Sunday. Raab said the expulsions ran counter to diplomatic norms since the two diplomats had been carrying out legitimate duties.

The Belarusian ambassador, Maxim Yermalovich, was summoned to the Foreign Office on Tuesday afternoon to be informed of the decision. The UK said its decision was appropriate and proportionate.
The Investigative Committee refused to start a criminal case regarding the death of Hennadiy Shutov, who was shot to the back of the head by a silovik on August 11 in Brest.

“The legal estimation of the actions of people connected with causing bodily harm to Shutov will be given during the investigation of a criminal case. At the moment, there is no basis for starting a criminal case on article 139 of the Criminal Code”, the statement of the Committee reads.

However, the investigation of a case of resisting a police officer continues. Shutov and his friend Alexander Kordyukov are suspects. TUT.BY couldn't find out anything from Shutov's daughter Anastacia - she signed a non-disclosure agreement.
Alexander Lukashenko, in a conversation with the head of trade unions of Belarus Mikhail Orda, commented on the military security.

“You heard yesterday, this is also very important: Poland and the United States have signed another agreement on military cooperation. New contingents of military personnel are already being transferred from the USA (not from Germany to Poland). The question is: why? If someone from our people does not understand, especially from these protestors, they should think that the situation is not so simple,” he said.

“If someone wants to make Belarus a province of Poland or Lithuania, this is possible only after my funeral. They must understand this,” Lukashenko noted.
Maria Kalesnikava's friend Tatyana Nikitina shared a part of the letter from Maria on Facebook. There she tells what she does in the cell and what records she sets.

Tatiana says that Maria already in her first letters mentioned that she did exercises when they are taken out for walks. And in the last, she noted that she was engaged in sports in the cell:

“I do fitness actively and look younger than two months ago,” she writes. “Highest scores are 350 squats in two sets, 100 push-ups in three sets. Stretching for twine is what I really want to! Stretching for the back and the whole body. If you give me a clue to some cool exercises, I'd be very, very happy!”

In a difficult situation, Maria does not lose her optimism: “During recent years, I slept for 4-5 hours a day, and now I sleep for 8. This is something unimaginable!”

“In any case, we will provide assistance, just other opportunities will be used for this. Thanks to the support of the country and the world, the help that Belarusians receive is unique and will continue,” Stryzhak concludes.
“TOGETHER WE ARE THE BELARUSIAN NATION”

Zhodzina. Alexander Morozov, a worker from BelAZ joined the nationwide strike.

“I'm a Belarusian. Together we are the Belarusian nation. We must have freedom of speech, freedom of expression. Instead we see siloviki beating and mutilating peaceful people. They don't care who to beat, women, men, or children. They don't care if people get disfigured for life,” his statement reads.
“NO DIALOGUE IN THE STREET”

Natalia Kachanava, head of the upper house of Belarusian parliament, commented on the medical workers' protests:

“There will be no dialogue in the street. And those who break the law, who come to the unsanctioned protests and disturb public order, this is why they are arrested - and will be! We are a state that values the rule of law!”
Alexander Zhdanovich, an actor known for playing in a bedtime children's show “Kalykhanka” (“Lullaby”), got convicted to 9 days in jail. He was detained on November 8 in Minsk, when he tried to defend a woman who was verbally abused by a riot cop.
