A Deluge of Tears: The Conflux of Persian Shiʿi Literature, Ritual, and Identity in Martyrdom Narratives

This lecture presents the first English in-depth study of one of the most important maqtals (martyrdom narratives) ever written in Persian, the Rowz̤at ol-Shohadā’ (Meadow of the Martyrs) by Ḥoseyn b. ʿAlī Beyhaqī Kāshefī (d. 910 A.H./1504 C.E.). Through the broader lens of the literary apotheosis of a historical figure, Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī (d. 61 A.H./680 C.E.) into an epic hero, I argue that 1) Kāshefī’s text largely changed the landscape of Iranian Twelver Shiʿism by recasting Ḥusayn’s story, resulting in the rise of Persian martyrdom literature; 2) Kāshefī’s decision to compose the book in Persian, instead of Arabic, as well as his incorporation of references from Iranian legend, resulted in a maqtal that was particularly appealing to a Persian-speaking audience; 3) after Kāshefī’s death, the Safavid dynasty encouraged the creation of a mourning cult with the Rowz̤at as its centerpiece. With this, the Safavids laid out their vision for the conversion of Iran to a Persianized Twelver Shiʿism. This dissertation also critiques the concept of syncretism, proposing the paradigm of memory relics as a methodological tool in analyzing the genealogy of religious, linguistic, and socio-cultural interactions without relying on Orientalist constructs of religion.


Dr. Paul Anderson is a lecturer of Persian literature at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. in 2021. He obtained his M.A. in Arabic Literature and Islamic Studies from the American University in Cairo (2013), where he spent five years conducting research on classical Islamic philosophy and Arabic linguistics. He specializes in Shiʻi intellectual history, with specific areas of interest focusing on Persian, Arabic, Urdu, and Gujarati literature, historical linguistics, Islamic philosophy, Ismaʻili doctrines, the ghulāt movements, minority religions in the Muslim-majority world, and the Safavid period. His Ph.D. dissertation, “A Deluge of Tears", recently won the Foundation for Iranian Studies 2020-2021 Best Ph.D. Dissertation of the Year. Dr. Anderson's forthcoming article, “Epiphany: A Comparative Consideration of Omniscience According to the Philosophies of Śāntarakṣita and Suhrawardī,” combines his expertise in Islamic philosophy with his ongoing interest in Indic intellectual history, exploring the commonalities between Islamic and Buddhist epistemologies of particulars and universals.

Sarah Mokh is a PhD student in Islamic Studies at New York University, where she received her MA in 2020. Her research focuses on Islamic intellectual history, devotional literature, and ritual piety. She is also a Research Associate at the Project on Shi'ism and Global Affairs at Harvard Divinity School. As an undergraduate student at Harvard, she studied English and Islamic Studies and she is an award-winning Lebanese-American writer. She has also volunteered for a number of Muslim organizations, including the Harvard Islamic Society, Taha Collectice, and the Islamic Center at NYU.

Zeinab Vessal is a PhD student in Art and Religion at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), Berkeley. She received her BA and MA degrees from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran and Tarbiat Modares University. Zeinab studies Shi’i Islamic art and material culture in early modern and modern Iran. She also comparatively studies Shi’i and Christian emblematic arts to foster a dialogue among artistic traditions and aesthetic perceptions in Christianity and Islam.

Nicole Correri is an Islamic Studies PhD candidate in Graduate Program in Religion at Boston University, and she received her MA in Islamic Studies from Hartford Seminary in 2018. Her areas of interest include Shi‘a Islam, Gender Studies, Digital Religion, and Ritual Studies. Her particular focus area is on gender construction in contemporary online English language Shi‘a religious discourse.

خطبه ۲۰۲ نهج‌البلاغه در سوگ حضرت فاطمه زهرا سلام الله علیها

وَ مِنْ کَلَامٍ لَهُ (علیه السلام) رُوِیَ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَهُ عِنْدَ دَفْنِ سَیِّدَةِ النِّسَاءِ فَاطِمَةَ (علیها السلام) کَالْمُنَاجِی بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ (صلی الله علیه وآله) عِنْدَ قَبْرِهِ:
السَّلَامُ عَلَیْکَ یَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَنِّی وَ عَنِ ابْنَتِکَ النَّازِلَةِ فِی جِوَارِکَ وَ السَّرِیعَةِ اللَّحَاقِ بِکَ. قَلَّ یَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَنْ صَفِیَّتِکَ صَبْرِی وَ رَقَ عَنْهَا تَجَلُّدِی، إِلَّا أَنَّ فِی التَّأَسِّی لِی بِعَظِیمِ فُرْقَتِکَ وَ فَادِحِ مُصِیبَتِکَ مَوْضِعَ تَعَزٍّ، فَلَقَدْ وَسَّدْتُکَ فِی مَلْحُودَةِ قَبْرِکَ وَ فَاضَتْ بَیْنَ نَحْرِی وَ صَدْرِی نَفْسُکَ، فَ "إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَ إِنَّا إِلَیْهِ راجِعُونَ". فَلَقَدِ اسْتُرْجِعَتِ الْوَدِیعَةُ وَ أُخِذَتِ الرَّهِینَةُ، أَمَّا حُزْنِی فَسَرْمَدٌ وَ أَمَّا لَیْلِی فَمُسَهَّدٌ، إِلَی أَنْ یَخْتَارَ اللَّهُ لِی دَارَکَ الَّتِی أَنْتَ بِهَا مُقِیمٌ. وَ سَتُنَبِّئُکَ ابْنَتُکَ بِتَضَافُرِ أُمَّتِکَ عَلَی هَضْمِهَا، فَأَحْفِهَا السُّؤَالَ وَ اسْتَخْبِرْهَا الْحَالَ، هَذَا وَ لَمْ یَطُلِ الْعَهْدُ وَ لَمْ یَخْلُ مِنْکَ الذِّکْرُ. وَ السَّلَامُ عَلَیْکُمَا سَلَامَ مُوَدِّعٍ، لَا قَالٍ وَ لَا سَئِمٍ، فَإِنْ أَنْصَرِفْ فَلَا عَنْ مَلَالَةٍ، وَ إِنْ أُقِمْ فَلَا عَنْ سُوءِ ظَنٍّ بِمَا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الصَّابِرِینَ.


این سخن از آن حضرت روایت شده که هنگام به خاک سپردن سیده زنان، فاطمه (س) بر سر مزار رسول اللّه (ص)، چنانکه گویی با حضرتش راز می گوید، بیان داشته است:

سلام بر تو، ای پیامبر خدا. سلام من و دخترت که اکنون در کنار تو فرود آمده و چه زود به تو پیوست. ای رسول خدا، بر مرگ دخت برگزیده تو، شکیبایی من اندک است و طاقت و توانم از دست رفته ولی مرا، که اندوه عظیم فراق تو را دیده ام و رنج مصیبت تو را چشیده ام، جای شکیبایی است. من خود تو را به دست خود در قبر خواباندم و هنگامی که سر بر سینه من داشتی، جان به جان آفرین تسلیم نمودی. «انا لله و انا الیه راجعون».
آن ودیعت بازگردانده شد و آن امانت به صاحبش رسید. و اندوه مرا پایانی نیست. همه شب خواب به چشمم نرود تا آن گاه که خداوند برای من سرایی را که تو در آن جای گرفته ای، اختیار کند.
بزودی، دخترت تو را خبر دهد که چگونه امتت گرد آمدند و بر او ستم کردند. همه سرگذشت را از او بپرس و خبر حال ما را از او بخواه. اینها در زمانی بود که از مرگ تو دیری نگذشته بود و تو از یادها نرفته بودی.
بدرود تو را و دخترت را. بدرود کسی که وداع می کند، نه بدرود کسی که رنجیده و ملول است. اگر از اینجا بازمی گردم نه از روی ملالت است و اگر درنگ می کنم نه به سبب آن است که به وعده ای که خدا به صابران داده است بدگمان شده ام.
