Farhad Ghoddoussi is a Research Staff at Wayne State University, where he also received his PhD in Physics from in 2003. Aside from his education in Physics, Dr. Ghoddoussi has had extensive studies in Islamic Studies starting during his college years and he has been an active member and lecturer in the Shia community of Detroit since 2003.

فرهاد قدوسی پژوهشگر در زمینه تصویربرداری پزشکی در دانشگاه ایالتی وین بوده و دکترای خویش را در رشته فیزیک از این دانشگاه در سال ۲۰۰۳ دریافت کرده است. وی از دوران کارشناسی تا به امروز مطالعات دینی داشته‌ و از سال ۲۰۰۳ سخنران دینی و عضو فعال جامعه شیعیان ایالت میشیگان است. سخنرانی های پیشین او درباره "اسلام و مسیحیت" و "تاریخ تشیع" را می‌توانید در کانال یوتیوب اس‌ام‌ای ملاحظه بفرمایید.

“Remembering Karbala Through Communal Care”, by Shereen Yousuf

Shereen Yousuf is a doctoral candidate in the Rhetoric, Politics and Culture program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research explores how Muslim communities in the U.S. draw from their faith and community knowledge to make sense of the social/political climate in the U.S., and how this informs Muslim-based activism. Prior to moving to Madison, Shereen was an adjunct instructor of intercultural communication, and was heavily involved in the Jafari Shia community in the Chicago-land area. She is currently working with the Shia Racial Justice Coalition to develop an anti-racism curriculum that specifically caters to Jafari Shia Muslim communities in the U.S. for her doctoral dissertation, bridging together her passions for decolonial theorizing, pedagogy, and liberatory community-based practices.

Arman Rahmim is a professor of Radialogy and Physics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, where he received his PhD in physics from in 2005. From 2006 to 2017 he was a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore. He is an active member of Vancouver Shia community, and he was the executive of Imam Mahdi Islamic Education Center (IMIEC) in Baltimore, Maryland.

“Grief and Loss in Shi’i Thought” by Gianni Izzo

Gianni Izzo is doctoral candidate of Islamic studies in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona.

Abstract:
My talk examines Zayn al-Din al-'Amili's Musakkin al-fuʾād, a treatise on the grief and consolation of losing a child. Al-'Amili's contribution to this genre offers a Shi'i view of divine justice and the problem of evil. According to this view, divine compensation is offered to the bereaved on the conditions of patient resignation and recognition of loss in relation to the ordeal and death suffered by the fourteen Infallibles. I analyze al-'Amili's use of prophetic narratives and hadith to explore their implications for an idealized expression of Muslim mourning and our understanding of Imam Husayn’s tragic fate.

He is the author of Angels Hastening: The Karbala Dreams (Gorgias Press, 2021), Half of my Heart: The Narratives of Zaynab, Daughter of Ali (Gorgias Press, 2018), and Fatima, Daughter of Muhammad (Gorgias Press, 2017). He is currently working on his book project about Abbas ibn Ali.
