At LevelUp IAS, we performed Competitive Aptitude Assessment Test with the help of Jnana Prabodhini, Pune.

Developed by Dr Savita Kulkarni and Dr Vivek Kulkarni, after the experience of mentoring more than 1500 officers over the span of 30 years, this test assesses the various aspects like aptitude, competitive spirit, study skills, self regulation and cognitive abilities.

Going beyond the classroom teaching and regular tests, we need to cultivate the qualities required to clear the exam. This test is a very scientific way of assessing where a student presently is and what needs to be done to get there.

There are some initiatives like this. After 6th, after 12th standard etc..

I have nothing against these two particular coachings here. As far as they are about holistic development of personality, if that is what they are going to do in such programs, I think it is totally fine.

But if they are going to teach diluted version of NCERTs, Laxmikant and Spectrum, and simplified version of current affairs, in the name of early preparation, I think something is wrong in us as a nation.

Nobody told us that demographic dividend means rather more cutthroat competition and age compression like this. What we used to do at 21 is now being done at 12 in the name of early start. Is it really healthy sign of progress as a society?

I remember Tagore on this. We need more freedom to learn. The whole industry of private education-competition-admission-recruitment-coaching that we have created is doing exactly opposite of that.

Does an individual have any agency to come out of it? It is too difficult to break out of it.

Even after joining the civil services, one has to learn how to be empathetic, deliver the expectations, all while managing the pressure and conflicting interests.

In such scenario, any good work that you do, while facing massive odds, will only get thank you. And sometimes not even that. For good civil servants, it is only expected out of you. For you, it becomes a thankless job. Don't expect any accolades.

And then, sometimes, out of nowhere, you will be a scapegoat when someone else bungles up.

Karnataka’s ruling politicians and cricket administrators are jointly responsible for Wednesday’s tragedy. Their greedy lust for reflected glory led to it. To make an outstanding officer a scapegoat is reprehensible.” -- Ramachandra Guha, Historian

(It is not merely a case study for GS4. It is something to feel and think about.)

The multi party delegations are back to Delhi. It took Pakistan to bring the people together.

The Mission was complete. But long miles are still to go before it is really completed.

Hello students,

I just met some students who were not able to study. Their scores in Prelims are on border - in mid 80s. They are not sure whether they would qualify for Main examination. And they were extremely anxious about it.

This is actually a normal thing every year. So, I was little surprised looking at their level of anxiety. A deeper probe revealed that they are stressed out for last 2 days due to continuous consumption of social media. On Telegram there are certain groups where the results date/time are speculated every day. And every day they are postponed. It is creating unnecessary anxiety and leading to waste of time.

My suggestion is - stick to your preparation. Result will come whenever UPSC wants it to come. We should not spend our time in doomscrolling, rather we should focus on studies. Every day is precious right now.

Also, we need to learn to regulate ourselves during the times of high pressure and uncertainty. That is an OLQ (officer like quality) which we must inculcate if we are to become good officers.

One simple way is - stay off the Social Media for some time.

All the best.
Nikhil
