With Dr. Ayyaz Tamboli sir, IAS 2009 Chattisgarh cadre.

His work among the tribals of central India is extremely inspiring and exceptional. He managed to ensure that good quality medical services are available in the remote tribal locations succesfully. It is now global case study and among the best practices of governance.

I wanted to meet him for long time. He is posted in Delhi for quite some time but it was today that the meeting could happen.

I am very glad. A fanboy moment.

This is one reason I always felt that history of Delhi is overrated. Many people in Delhi feel ki sari history jo hai yahi pe hai. Sare monuments, sari virasat....

In such mindset, yahaki chhoti chhoti ghatna bhi national hoti hai... aur rest of India ki badi badi ghatnaye bhi regional hoti hai. Bhai, go and see the country first.

Decentralization sirf polity me nahi, mindset me chahiye, and for that it should first happen in History. Our "regional" history needs to be given proper place in our history book.

With the students of northeast India at LevelUp IAS.

Most of them are from remote tribes in Arunachal and now staying in Delhi and preparing for civil services.

I have been to Arunachal in 2015. It was 10 years ago. That visit was almost a month long and was designed to help students preparing for APPSC.

Knowing first-hand what beautiful land, people, food, culture and weather they have to leave behind, when coming to a mega city like Delhi, I salute their indomitable spirit.

LevelUp IAS will continue to have special bond with the northeast.

Meeting in Delhi... with both Vivek sir and Savita taai of JP, along with many senior officers with illustrious career in the government India. Let me mention only two.

Prashant Lokhande sir (IAS 2001) presently at the desk of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh in the Ministry of Home Affairs is doing perhaps one of the most stressful and important jobs in India today.

Anand Patil sir (IAS 1997), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Education. He is leading the change in all Indian schools trying to address Mental Health challenge.

Always inspirational. I hope and pray that our students at LevelUp IAS also give us opportunity of such inspirational meetings, exchange of ideas, sharing of experiences and of course, photo-ops one day.

At LevelUp IAS, we performed Competitive Aptitude Assessment Test with the help of Jnana Prabodhini, Pune.

Developed by Dr Savita Kulkarni and Dr Vivek Kulkarni, after the experience of mentoring more than 1500 officers over the span of 30 years, this test assesses the various aspects like aptitude, competitive spirit, study skills, self regulation and cognitive abilities.

Going beyond the classroom teaching and regular tests, we need to cultivate the qualities required to clear the exam. This test is a very scientific way of assessing where a student presently is and what needs to be done to get there.

There are some initiatives like this. After 6th, after 12th standard etc..

I have nothing against these two particular coachings here. As far as they are about holistic development of personality, if that is what they are going to do in such programs, I think it is totally fine.

But if they are going to teach diluted version of NCERTs, Laxmikant and Spectrum, and simplified version of current affairs, in the name of early preparation, I think something is wrong in us as a nation.

Nobody told us that demographic dividend means rather more cutthroat competition and age compression like this. What we used to do at 21 is now being done at 12 in the name of early start. Is it really healthy sign of progress as a society?

I remember Tagore on this. We need more freedom to learn. The whole industry of private education-competition-admission-recruitment-coaching that we have created is doing exactly opposite of that.

Does an individual have any agency to come out of it? It is too difficult to break out of it.

Even after joining the civil services, one has to learn how to be empathetic, deliver the expectations, all while managing the pressure and conflicting interests.

In such scenario, any good work that you do, while facing massive odds, will only get thank you. And sometimes not even that. For good civil servants, it is only expected out of you. For you, it becomes a thankless job. Don't expect any accolades.

And then, sometimes, out of nowhere, you will be a scapegoat when someone else bungles up.

Karnataka’s ruling politicians and cricket administrators are jointly responsible for Wednesday’s tragedy. Their greedy lust for reflected glory led to it. To make an outstanding officer a scapegoat is reprehensible.” -- Ramachandra Guha, Historian

(It is not merely a case study for GS4. It is something to feel and think about.)
