The decision was taken to bring back the tiger claw that was used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to kill the general of Bijapur, Afzal Khan at Pratapgarh Fort.

According to reports, the tiger claws then came into the possession of James Grant Duff, an officer of the East India Company and were then gifted to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

James Grant Duff (1789–1858) was a British soldier and historian employed by East India Company. He was a freind of Henry Potinger and a disciple of Mountstuart Elphinstone.

He took part in the third Anglo Maratha and then after the Maratha Swarajya was extinguished, he wrote the first history of Marathas in English, using his direct access to the primary sources.
