Statue-in-cage is very unfortunate. People may agree or disagree with Priyar's ideas and actions. But putting his bust in a jail in order to save it from mutilation or defacement is tragic.

Quintessential dalit literature. It started in 1970s-80s in Marathi and soon in Tamil. By 1990s they were translated in English. I have heard that, by 2000s, such books have also started to appear in Hindi.
I had read a handful of such autobiographies back in 1999-2004 when I was growing up in a school in Pune.
However, I came from urban, educated, upper caste and middle class background. Nobody around me spoke about it, I never saw, and it was as if it didn't exist.
Only when I came out that part of my life did I start noticing it around.
Even to read such books require daring. To live them, one cannot imagine.
