Verse 5 Reflections

When you learn about space, the planets and the stars, you can't but be in awe. When you compare the size of the Earth to the other planets and the billions of stars, it really humbles you. When I watch videos about space, I can't stop uttering SubhanAllah!

Such reflections on the Greatness of Allah and being in awe of His Power and Majesty can actually help decrease symptoms of depression and stress levels. Psychologists who are not Muslim have done research of how feelings of awe can have a positive effect on one's mental health and well-being.

Reflecting on space also shows that we are just mere specks compared to Allah's vast creation.

Yet, Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the Earth, the Creator of all these magnificent celestial bodies is closer to us than our own jugular vein. When we call unto Allah, He most certainly Hears us individually and personally. It comes in a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim that whenever we read 'Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen' (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe), Allah responds by saying 'My servant has praised Me' and so on. Just think for a second...we have a personal 1-to-1 connection with the Creator and Sustainer of everything that has ever existed, is existing and will ever exist.

Let's try to establish a personal connection with Allah. If we truly know that Allah is with us and we have full conviction of that, our spiritual and physical states will be transformed.

Verse 15

Arabic:
هُوَ الَّذي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَرضَ ذَلولًا فَامشوا في مَناكِبِها وَكُلوا مِن رِزقِهِ ۖ وَإِلَيهِ النُّشورُ

Transliteration: Huwalladhee ja'ala lakumul-arda dhaloolan famshoo fee manaakibihaa wakuloo mir-rizqihi wa-ilayhin-nushoor

Translation: He is the One Who smoothed out the earth for you, so move about in its regions and eat from His provisions. And to Him is the resurrection of all.
Verse 16

Arabic:
أَأَمِنتُم مَن فِي السَّماءِ أَن يَخسِفَ بِكُمُ الأَرضَ فَإِذا هِيَ تَمورُ

Transliteration: A amintum-man fissamaa-i an yakhsifa bikumul-arda fa-idhaa hiya tamoor

Translation: Do you feel secure that the One Who is in heaven will not cause the earth to swallow you up as it quakes violently?
Verses 6-9 Reflections

In these ayahs, Allah makes mention of the people of fire and the punishments that they will face. We must understand clearly and without doubt that jahannam is real. It's physical and not metaphorical. We as Muslims don't have a concept which says everyone will go to Jannah. Jahannam is there for justice and if everyone were to go to Jannah then how is it fair on those who strove to do good compared to someone who spent their life doing evil and disbelief?

We must also not just rely on hope. Of course the Mercy of Allah is unimaginable, but we should be fearful of the fire. At the same time, there are some who lose hope and think there's no way Allah will forgive them. This is wrong. A believer should always be in a state of hope and fear - that is the perfect balance.

When we read verses regarding the fire, we shouldn't just think they are related to disbelievers and not take heed from them. We should see if we have similar traits which could lead us down the wrong path. For example, in verse 8 & 9, the inhabitants of the fire will be asked, "Did a warner not come to you?". They will respond by saying, "Yes, a warner did come to us, but we denied and said, "Allah has revealed nothing. You are extremely astray".

Now, ofcourse as Muslims, we don't deny that the Qur'an is from Allah and we believe in Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final messenger but how many times have we heard a reminder and simply ignored it? How many times have we been advised sincerely but continued in our habitual sins and did not try to improve our character? How many times have we remained arrogant and stubborn and refused to make amends with family members?

I'm not saying being imperfect Muslims means we are destined for the fire but we must atleast try to improve ourselves as much as we can. We all sin but we should constantly self-evaluate and turn back to Allah.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, (peace and blessings be upon him), said, “All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best sinners are those who repent.” Tirmidhi

May Allah protect us from the fire and grant us Jannah.

Verse 17

Arabic:
أَم أَمِنتُم مَن فِي السَّماءِ أَن يُرسِلَ عَلَيكُم حاصِبًا ۖ فَسَتَعلَمونَ كَيفَ نَذيرِ

Transliteration: Am amintum man fissamaa-i an yursila 'alaykum haasiban fasata'lamoona kayfa nadheer

Translation: Or do you feel secure that the One Who is in heaven will not unleash upon you a storm of stones. Only then would you know how serious My warning was!
Verse 18

Arabic:
وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَكِيرِ

Transliteration: Wa laqad kadhdhaballadheena min qablihim fakayfa kaana nakeer

Translation: And certainly those before them denied as well, then how severe was My response!
