2021 Most World Superbike FP2 Result: Rain Dampens Session
Garrett Gerloff was quickest in a wet session that afforded nobody the opportunity to improve on their morning's times with many not even recording laps. Only nine of the 23 were within the 107% of the morning's quickest time and only five other riders set times, with a further nine sitting out the session.

2021 Styria Moto2 FP2 Result: Gardner Fastest On Drying Track
After rain affected their colleagues’ FP2 sessions, the surface was drying rapidly by the time the intermediate class joined the action and improvements to FP1 times seemed more realistic. However, it all came down to the final five minutes, when Remy Gardner made the first significant improvement to top the session and climb into third on the combined standings. Sam Lowes also made progress to finish the session second, with Tom Luthi a pleasant but unexpected sight in third place, one tenth of a second off the lead.

Styria MotoGP Friday Round Up: A Wasted Day, Yamaha's Problems In Mixed Conditions, And Filling Empty MotoGP Seats
In an ideal world, MotoGP teams can use practice to prepare for the race on Sunday. Test tires in FP1, make setup changes in FP2, finalize the setting in FP3 and FP4, then into qualifying to be ready for the race. In an ideal world, conditions are comparable enough through all practice sessions on Friday and Saturday to find the optimal setup choices for Sunday.

But we don't live in an ideal world, of course. Temperature differences and changing conditions leave a lot to a mixture of experience and guesswork. Even then, as long as you have dry weather, you can get pretty close.

That is not the case this weekend in Spielberg, however. FP1 saw excellent conditions: warm, dry sunny. Not too hot, and temperatures not far off optimum for the tires. But rain started in the afternoon, and FP2 was wet, with a drying line as the session went on. Data collected in the morning would be useful for a dry race. Data in the afternoon is contingent on the amount of rain that falls in the case of a wet race, which looks a racing certainty.

Ready for anything?

A wet race would render the data collected on Saturday pretty much irrelevant as well. Saturday in Spielberg looks set very fair, bright, sunny and warm. But the forecast for Sunday is the worst of all worlds: thunderstorms, with a chance of heavy rain.

2021 Styria Moto3 FP3 Result: Sasaki Stumbles To The Top
It was a sunny start for day two in Austria and the lightweight class had plenty of time to complete the challenge for top 14 positions. It eventually turned into a gravel to glory story for Ayumu Sasaki, who started the session in the gravel trap at turn four but rejoined the action in the closing stages to claim top spot at the checkered flag. The Japanese rider demoted colleague Jaume Masia by three hundredths of a second, with Filip Salac and Jeremy Alcoba making a late jump into the top four.

2021 Styria Moto2 FP3 Result: Gardner Resumes Control
Sunshine was on the menu for Saturday morning in Spielberg and although riders were in no rush to improve their times early on, things soon got heated and the top 14 came down to the final flying laps. Remy Gardner proved to be the quickest man on track, the championship leader drawing ever nearer to the lap record and seven hundredths of a second ahead of his rivals. Friday leader Marco Bezzecchi started the day with a strange crash on the exit for turn 3 but was quickly on the pace when he rejoined for the final five minutes.

Franco Morbidelli is to race for the Monster Energy Yamaha team next year. Speaking to MotoMatters.com, Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Director Lin Jarvis confirmed that the Italian is to move up to the factory team for the 2022 season, once the details of the contract have been sorted out.

Jarvis was speaking to us as part of a much larger interview to be published after the Austrian round of MotoGP. Morbidelli's move to the factory team is a result of a situation which was hard to imagine at the start of the 2021 season. Back in January, Yamaha looked to have one of the strongest rider line ups in MotoGP.

Raul Fernandez Confirmed To Join Tech3 KTM In MotoGP For 2022
KTM has officially confirmed that Raul Fernandez will be moving up to MotoGP in 2022, racing for the Tech3 KTM team. The Spaniard has been rewarded for a sensational rookie campaign in Moto2 with a promotion to MotoGP.

That Fernandez would move up to MotoGP was an open secret. The only question was the timing of the announcement. But KTM had to fight to keep the Spaniard, after Yamaha had attempted to poach him for the Petronas team.

With Fernandez joining current Moto2 Ajo teammate Remy Gardner in Tech3, the current line up of Danilo Petrucci and Iker Lecuona are set to lose their places in MotoGP. Lecuona has been linked to a move back to Moto2, while Petrucci is widely tipped to move to the WorldSBK series, where he could make a return to Ducati.
