Sheikh Muhammad Bin Salih Al-Uthaymeen: رحمه الله

…Making efforts on one’s soul to stick to observing the obligatory Prayers in congregation; many only find it easy observing the Prayers in their homes but find it extremely difficult to pray with the congregation in the mosques. Hence, he is always in a struggle with his soul saying: “Be patient, let me finish this job” or “I’ll do such and such” until the congregational prayer eludes him. That the individual finds it difficult observing the Prayers in congregation is proof of some levels of hypocrisy in his heart. The evidence for that is the statement of the Prophet ﷺ, “The most difficult prayer for the hypocrites are the Ishaa and Fajr Prayers; but if they know what is in both [of goodness], they will come to them even if it amounts to crawling.” [Al-Bukhaari, Book of the Call-to-Prayer] This requires striving.

فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ فِي زِينَتِهِ قَالَ الَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا يَا لَيْتَ لَنَا مِثْلَ مَا أُوتِيَ قَارُونُ إِنَّهُ لَذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ

📖So he [Qaroon] came out before his people in his pomp. Those who desire the worldly life said: “Oh, if only we had like that which was given to Qaroon. Indeed, He is one of great fortune.”
[Al-Qasas:79][28:79]

From Abu Umamah that The Messenger of Allaah -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- said:
«مَنْ غَدَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ لا يُرِيدُ إِلا أَنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ خَيْرًا أَوْ يَعْلَمَهُ، كَانَ لَهُ كَأَجْرِ حَاجٍّ تَامًّا حِجَّتُهُ»

Whoever went to the Masjid not wanting except to learn goodness or to teach it then he has the reward equal to a person performing Hajj completely.’
[Collected by Tabrani in ‘al-Kabeer’ authenticated by Al-Albaani]

روى أبو أمامة أن رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم   قال: ((من غَدا إِلَى الْمَسْجِد لَا يُرِيد إِلَّا أَن يتَعَلَّم خيرا أَو يُعلمهُ كَانَ لَهُ كَأَجر حَاج تَاما حجَّته))
أخرجه الطبرانى (8/94، رقم 7473) قال الهيثمي (1/123) رجاله موثقون كلهم،  والحاكم (1/169، رقم 311), وأبو نعيم فى الحلية( 6/97 )، وابن عساكر (16/456) . قال الألباني: حسن صحيح .

Hence, he is always in a struggle with his soul saying: “Be patient, let me finish this job” or “I’ll do such and such” until the congregational prayer eludes him. That the individual finds it difficult observing the Prayers in congregation is proof of some levels of hypocrisy in his heart. The evidence for that is the statement of the Prophet ﷺ, “The most difficult prayer for the hypocrites are the Ishaa and Fajr Prayers; but if they know what is in both [of goodness], they will come to them even if it amounts to crawling.” [Al-Bukhaari, Book of the Call-to-Prayer] This requires striving.

فَخَسَفۡنَا بِهِۦ وَبِدَارِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ فَمَا ڪَانَ لَهُ ۥ مِن فِئَةٍ۬ يَنصُرُونَهُ ۥ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنتَصِرِينَ (٨١)

📖So we caused the earth to swallow him and his home and so he had no group to aid him other than Allah, nor was he of those who could save themselves.

وَأَصۡبَحَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَمَنَّوۡاْ مَكَانَهُ ۥ بِٱلۡأَمۡسِ يَقُولُونَ وَيۡكَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَقۡدِرُ‌ۖ لَوۡلَآ أَن مَّنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡنَا لَخَسَفَ بِنَا‌ۖ وَيۡكَأَنَّهُ ۥ لَا يُفۡلِحُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ (٨٢)

📖 And those who had wished for his position earlier, began to say do you not know Allah expands the provision for whom he wills of his slaves and restricts it; Had it not been that Allah was gracious to us, he would have caused it to swallow us; do you not know that the disbelievers do not succeed.

📖 That home of the hereafter we designate it for those who do not desire elevation on earth nor corruption and the outcome is for al-Mutaqeen.

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “By Him in Whose Hand my life is, I sometimes thought of giving orders for firewood be collected, then for proclaiming the adhan for Salat. Then I would appoint an Imam to lead Salat, and then go to the houses of those who do not come to perform Salat in congregation, and set fire to their houses on them.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary:

This shows the compulsion of attending congregational Prayers because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would not have worried about it this much but because it involves abandoning an obligatory matter. He صلى الله عليه وسلم did not inform people of it except to warn them against abandoning it or disregarding it. Otherwise, there would not have been any benefit in informing them.

The fact that he صلى الله عليه وسلم considered punishing them in this manner shows the status of congregational Prayer, and that it is an important matter.
