📚The People of the Abyss is a book by Jack London, containing his first-hand account of several weeks spent living in the Whitechapel district of the East End of London in 1902.

▫️In The People of the Abyss, Jack London is toiling to come to grips with the reality of life in deep poverty, and he falls short, which is only to be expected. He spends seven weeks with the poor and writes his book as a clarion call to mainstream society — his society — that something is very wrong.

📝Summary

🖍Chapter 1: The Descent

Jack London decides to undertake an immersive research project and live in the East End of London, England. He plans to write a nonfiction work reporting on this. He obtains the address of a detective to help him find lodging, and he goes to the American consul to find protection if he needs it.

🖍Chapter 2: Johnny Upright

Jack London finds a detective who lives in the East End of London at the behest of his friends. He nicknames the detective Johnny Upright. London wants to pay Upright to shadow him for protection while he is undercover.

🖍Chapter 3: My Lodging and Some Others

Jack London finds a room in which to stay. He begins his research in earnest, first looking for housing as if he were a family man. He cannot find anything adequate. London learns that housing in the East End typically consists of one room for an entire family. Johnny Upright tells London he expects to move out of the East End when his lease expires. To London it does not sound as though the detective has any other affordable options. London terms the East End of the city "the Abyss" for the crushing poverty and misery he witnesses.

🖍Chapter 4: A Man and the Abyss

Jack London "rents" a room with the understanding that he will live with two other men. He meets a sailor and talks with him. The sailor reveals that he has no plans to ever marry or have children because of the squalor of the East End which the sailor feels he has no hope of escaping. Instead, the sailor drinks. London is struck by how normal the sailor seems.

🖍Chapter 5: Those on the Edge

Jack London's first impression of the East End is that the people there are generally happy even though they live in wretched conditions. However, this happiness is "the content of the full belly." Most people London sees are not concerned with anything beyond their next meal or drink. London states that "the city life of London is so utterly unnatural that the average workman or workwoman cannot stand it." The dirtiness, germs, and smoke of the city drain people of their energy. Children born in the east side of London grow up naturally weak. London concludes that the Abyss is "literally a huge man-killing machine." The East End kills people because of its poor conditions...

🖍Chapter 26: Drink, Temperance, and Thrift

Jack London discusses society's insistence that the poor be thrifty, as if they can be anything else. He claims this insistence is insulting because the poor eat little enough as it is. London also complains about the working class of the East End being "soaked in beer." He states that Christian missions and charities profess to help the poor but really just get in their way of bettering their own lives. He makes one exception for Dr. Barnardo Homes (1845–1905), a doctor who "snatches" children off the streets of the East End and sends them to better homes.

🖍Chapter 27: The Management

Jack London compares the overall situation of the Inuit people of Alaska to the people of the East End. According to London the Inuit people have better lives. They know starvation but it is not a chronic condition like it is for the people of the East End. The Inuit people are not in financial debt the way the people of the East End are. The people of the East End are often forced into debt by the middle- and upper-classes. London concludes that while "Civilization has increased man's producing power an hundred-fold ... the men of Civilization live worse than beasts." London blames the people he calls "the Management" who are the business owners and managers of the factories of the world.

🎼 Treat You Better
🎧 Shawn Mendes

🎸I won't lie to you
I know he's just not right for you
And you can tell me if I'm off
But I see it on your face
When you say that
he's the one that you want
And you're spending all your time
In this wrong situation
And anytime you want it to stop

🎻I know I can treat you
better than he can
And any girl like you
deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crying
When you should be
with me instead
I know I can treat you better
Better than he can

🎸I'll stop time for you
The second you say
you'd like me too
I just wanna give you
the loving that you're missing
Baby, just to wake up with you
Would be everything I need and this could be so different
Tell me what you want to do

🎻Cause I know I can treat you
better than he can
And any girl like you
deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crying
When you should be with me instead
I know I can treat you better
Better than he can
Better than he can

🎸Give me a sign
Take my hand, we'll be fine
Promise I won't let you down
Just know that you don't
Have to do this alone
Promise I'll never let you down

📝 Explanation;

💭 Little Women is a coming-of-age novel written by American novelist Louisa May Alcott, originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869 at the request of her publisher. The story follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—and details their passage from childhood to womanhood. Loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters, : 202  it is classified as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel.

💭Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success, with readers eager for more about the characters. Alcott quickly completed a second volume (titled Good Wives in the United Kingdom, though the name originated with the publisher and not Alcott). It was also met with success. The two volumes were issued in 1880 as a single novel titled Little Women. Alcott subsequently wrote two sequels to her popular work, both also featuring the March sisters: Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886).

💭The novel has been said to address three major themes: "domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity.": 200  According to Sarah Elbert, Alcott created a new form of literature, one that took elements from romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels, resulting in a totally new genre. Elbert argues that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the "All-American girl" and that her various aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters.
