▫️او در یک اتاق است، ظاهراً‌ اتاق خودش، اما این‌که چه‌طور به آنجا رسیده، چه‌قدر آن‌جا بوده و چه کسی به او می‌رسد همه رازند. به‌نظر می‌رسد او در جایی مثل پناهگاه باشد. او مانند راوی داستان «مسکن» حدس می‌زند که بی‌‌هوش شده یا «ضربه‌ای» به او وارد شده و به اینجا آورده شده است، اما مطمئن نیست زنده باشد. به آمبولانسی اشاره می‌کند، شاید همانی که مُلوی صدایش را شنیده است. ممکن است مرده باشد: «تقاص گناهانم را پس می‌دهم یا در یکی از عمارت‌های بهشت.» هر روز در باز می‌شود و...
 
▫️خرده روایتی از این رمان، درباره زندگی ساپوسکات در میان دهقانان است، اما با وقفه‌های بسیار سیاهه، جکسن و طوطی، وقفه‌هایی  درون‌نگرانه،  تفسیر روایی  و صداها. نوشتن بستر تداوم را فراهم می‌کند: «وقتی با همان مداد و در همان دفترچه درباره او می‌نویسم، درباره‌ی خودم هم می‌نویسم». او از لمبرت‌ها، رسیدن ساپو، آشپزخانه و مرغ خاکستری می‌گوید. همنان که تابستان به پایان می‌رسد، قصه روی امتحانات ساپو، دفن کردن قاطر، عدس‌ها، خرگوش سفید و تمرکز می‌کند. راوی درون یک جمجمه است.

▫️در بخشی از این روایت آمده است: «بله، روزگاری بود که بی‌درنگ شب می‌شد و با جست‌وجوی گرما و تکه‌های تقریباً خوردنی به‌خوبی می‌گذشت. و تصور می‌کنی که این وضع تا آخر همین‌طور باقی می‌ماند. اما ناگهان همه‌چیز دوباره شروع به خشم و خروش می‌کند، در جنگل‌هایی از سرخس‌های بزرگ گُم می‌شود یا در زمین‌های بایرِ در معرض بادهای شدید می‌چرخی، تا این‌که کنجکاو می‌شود که آیا بی‌خبر مرده‌ای و به دوزخ رفته‌ای یا باری دیگر در جایی حتی بدتر از جای قبلی به دنیا آمده‌ای.»

▫️همیشه از تماشای شیرینی پختن مادرم لذت می بردم. آدم معمولا مجذوب تماشای کار کسی می شود که به کارش وارد است. زن های آشپز و هنرمند را در حال تخت کردن یک تکه خمیر با وردنه تماشا کنید، ببینید چه استادانه کار می کنند. او جوی میتن، پر محتوی و  آکنده از رضایت و آرامش را به وجود می آورد، درست مثل همان راهبه ای که مراسم یک جشن مقدس را برگزار می کند. البته در وجود خودش هم همین احساس را داشت. مادرم ساعدهای کلفت و قوی و قرمزی داشت که اغلب آردی بودند...
