🔸Homer

💭Homer is the legendary author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic poems that are the central works of ancient Greek literature. The Iliad is set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Greek kingdoms. It focuses on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles lasting a few weeks during the last year of the war. The Odyssey focuses on the ten-year journey home of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity, the most widespread being that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. Modern scholars consider these accounts legendary.

💭The Homeric Question – concerning by whom, when, where and under what circumstances the Iliad and Odyssey were composed – continues to be debated. Broadly speaking, modern scholarly opinion falls into two groups. One holds that most of the Iliad and (according to some) the Odyssey are the works of a single poet of genius. The other considers the Homeric poems to be the result of a process of working and reworking by many contributors, and that "Homer" is best seen as a label for an entire tradition. It is generally accepted that the poems were composed at some point around the late eighth or early seventh century BC.

💭The poems are in Homeric Greek, also known as Epic Greek, a literary language which shows a mixture of features of the Ionic and Aeolic dialects from different centuries; the predominant influence is Eastern Ionic. Most researchers believe that the poems were originally transmitted orally. From antiquity until the present day, the influence of the Homeric epics on Western civilization has been great, inspiring many of its most famous works of literature, music, art and film. The Homeric epics were the greatest influence on ancient Greek culture and education; to Plato, Homer was simply the one who "has taught Greece" – ten Hellada pepaideuken.

🔸هومر

💭 هومِر یا هُمِر شاعر و داستانسرای یونانی است. وی احتمالاً در حدود ۸۰۰ سال (بعضی این تاریخ را ۲۰۰۰ سال ذکر کرده) پیش از میلاد می‌زیسته‌ است. این تنها چیزی است که دربارهٔ هومر می‌دانیم. تنها آثار به جا مانده از وی، دو گلچین شعر به نام‌های ایلیاد و ادیسه است. همهٔ آنچه که ما دربارهٔ تاریخ و افسانه‌های یونان باستان می‌دانیم از موضوع‌های همین شعرها گرفته شده‌ است.

💭 زندگی او را در قرن نهم ق.م. نوشته‌اند. در پایان زندگی نابینا شد و از شهری به شهری می‌رفت و اشعار رزمی خود را به نوای چنگ می‌خواند.

💭 هرودوت با قاطعیت نوشته‌ است که داستانسرایی بنام هومِر وجود داشته که در قرن نهم ق.م. می‌زیسته؛ از آنجایی که هرودوت به عنوان معتبرترین مورخ دوره باستان، مورد تأیید است، لذا می‌توان پذیرفت که هومِر از اهالی ناحیه اسمیرنا یونان بوده که وقایع مربوط به جنگ تروا را جمع‌ آوری کرده و با لعابی از افسانه و جنبه‌های مافوق انسانی آمیخته‌ است.

💭 ایلیاد و ادیسه اشعاری روایی هستند و هر یک صدها صفحه حجم دارند و قصه ایزدان و قهرمانان یونانی را تعریف می‌کنند. موضوع اصلی ایلیاد داستان جنگ تروا را تعریف می‌کند. ایلیاد علاوه بر قهرمانان جنگاوری چون آشیل، آیاس، هکتور، اودیسئوس و بسیاری از ایزدان کوه المپ و مسئولیت‌های متعدد، عادات و ضعف‌های اخلاقی آنان را وصف می‌کند. اُدیسه، دربارهٔ سرگذشت ده سال سفر و ماجراهایی را که اودیسئوس قهرمان یونان، هنگام بازگشت از جنگ تروا به سوی منزل با آن‌ها روبرو گردید، بازگو می‌کند. هر چند این منظومه بیشتر ماجرای چهل روز آخر سفر او را شرح می‌دهد. ادیسه منظومه‌ای دربارهٔ دریا و خشکی است و به قلمرو افسانه‌ها می‌پردازد، حتی جهان زیرزمین، سیکلوپها، سیرنها، خاروبدیس و سکولا را معرفی می‌کند.

💭 ایلیاد و ادیسه هر دو به راستی ادبیات بزرگی را پدید آورده‌اند و به راستی منبع اصلی آگاهی ما دربارهٔ اساطیر یونان به‌شمار می‌روند. به هر حال، در ورای افسانه غول‌هایی مثل آیاس و آشیل، حقایقی هم نهفته‌ است.
