When I think of death, and of late the idea has come with alarming frequency, I seem at peace with the idea that a day will dawn when I no longer be among those living in this valley of strange humors.

I can accept the idea of my own demise, but I am unable to accept the death of anyone else.
I find it impossible to let a friend or relative go into that country to no return.

Disbelief becomes my close companion, and anger follows in its wake.

I answer the heroic question ‘Death, where is thy sting?’ with ‘It is here in my heart and mind and memories.

Maya Angelou

born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou's series of seven autobiographies focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.

شاعر، خواننده، خاطره‌نویس، بازیگر و فعال حقوق مدنی اهل آمریکا بود. او هفت زندگی‌نامه از خود منتشر کرد، سه کتاب از مجموعه مقالات او چاپ شد، چندین کتاب شعر بیرون داد و با فهرستی از نمایشنامه‌ها، فیلم‌ها و نمایش‌های تلویزیونی که طی بیش از ۵۰ سال تألیف آنها به طول انجامیده بود، اعتبار خاصی کسب کرد. او چندین جوایز معتبر و بیش از ۵۰ مدرک افتخاری دریافت کرد. آنجلو بیشتر برای سری هفتگانه زندگینامه‌هایش شناخته شده‌است که بیشتر بر دوران کودکی و تجربیات اولیه او متمرکز است. اولین کتاب این سری «می‌دانم چرا پرنده درون قفس می‌خواند» (۱۹۶۹) از زندگی او تا سن ۱۷ سالگی می‌گوید و برای او تحسین و شهرت بین‌المللی به ارمغان آورد.
