Hi everyone! Zulas here, the mod with a bonking hammer. As Pride month comes to an end, we have a message in the spirit of Pride’s roots in political activism. This meme channel is run by Hours, and I simply help mod. We’re two queer furries living in the US. We are also both old enough to remember when our rights as queer folk were not supported by a majority consciousness. And now we’ve seen the same rhetoric against gay people back then be recycled and rebranded to attack trans people today.
The new age of internet communication has been unprecedented for the global community. We’ve grown closer and more interconnected than any generation before us at a break-neck pace. This has also led to new forms of misinformation tactics from groups that have an interest to create conflict and discord. Just this month, we had to bonk a Russian bot spewing propaganda in the channel. This is all to say that there is a non-zero number of encounters you may have online that are fabricated by people that have a vested interest in muddying the informational waters.
Being aware of that, the upcoming election in the US will have wide-sweeping consequences, entirely dependent on who wins. Since the majority of our community is centered in the queer community, these consequences could drastically affect many of our day-to-day lives depending on who prevails. Voting is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL if we wish to maintain our freedoms that we and previous generations have fought so hard to secure. Even despite the vast disapproval of the two main presidential candidates, this election will also be for many other local and federal candidates who will have an even-more significant impact on the world we live in.
And yes, there are other forms of political action that can bring about tangible change. City hall meeting engagements, strategic protests, political canvassing, but each of these actions ultimately aims to influence political will, which is accomplished best through voting. It is easy to feel discouraged that voting does not matter. Believing that voting does not matter means accepting the worst likely outcome. Voter turnout among the youngest generations has historically always been lowest, causing political entities to deprioritize appealing to this base. Voting can bring about change when voters turn out.
To put it bluntly, if we do not fully support candidates that promote our preferred liberal positions (or at least most of them), then we fall into the risk of losing all of those hard-won rights going forward. So, if you are a US citizen, please go to vote.gov to register to vote or to double check your registration. If you're already registered, see if your friends are registered.
Thank you for coming to my Dog Talk. I will not be taking further questions, and Hours and I reserve the right to ban you for any reason since this is a private channel. There's strength in community, and remember, the first Pride was a riot against the police!
tl:dr
VOTE.GOV CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION
If you're a US citizen, PLEASE go out and vote. Don't believe everything you read or hear from social media, there are active misinformation campaigns. Go and vote, do not be discouraged. This election, whether you participate in it or not, WILL have long-standing effects in our world.
