🌿SIGNIFICANCE OF SADHANA🌿

The process which takes you from tamas [laziness, dulness, ignorance, indolence] to sattwa [purer, more luminous, tranquil, harmonious way of living] has a name, and that is sadhana. Generally, when we use the word ‘sadhana’, people identify it with a spiritual discipline, a spiritual practice. However, sadhana means attainment of perfection in that which you do. When you were learning to write ABC at school, you had to fill many pages by writing each letter repeatedly. After three or four pages of writing ‘A,’ you had to write ‘B’, and so on. You were given lined pages and you had to write in between those lines. That is sadhana for a child, and the result of that sadhana is received. If you write properly, you get plus marks, you get a gold star, and if you do not write properly then you get a red ‘x’. The sadhana of a child gets results then and there. The more you write, the more fluent you become, the more clarity there is in the writing, and the letter is recognized the more easily.

The result of any sadhana you do well is attainment of maturity. Through sadhana you get plus marks in life. Those who do not do sadhana get minus marks, become lazy and stay ignorant. Another form of sadhana is found in the story of Arjuna, friend and disciple of Sri Krishna. When he was young, he was an avid archer. Once, while he was eating his dinner at night, the candle blew out and there was pitch darkness in the dining room. Arjuna kept on eating and suddenly he realized that his hands were going automatically to his mouth; they were not going to his nose, or to his eyes, or to his ears, but straight to his mouth. He recognized that even in absolute darkness, if the senses are trained, they will follow their course of action. With this in mind, he started training himself to shoot the arrow at night without seeing where he was shooting. Of course, this sadhana had its own problems, but he overcame them all and became the greatest archer of his time.

The story indicates that if you train your senses and your mind, then there is nothing that you cannot achieve; everything is achieved naturally and spontaneously. Training regulates the behaviour of the senses and the mind. This is the kind of training you lack in your life. This regulation of sensory and mental behaviour is known as sadhana. Sensory education takes place at the physical level, the sensorial level and the interactive level. It is an interactive process: you and the world. Mental sadhana is practised to pacify mental agitation and to develop concentration and focused awareness. Emotional sadhana takes place in the form of bhakti, intellectual sadhana in the form of jnana and spiritual sadhana in the form of pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and absorption.

You may feel good or bad, but these feelings are bubbling from your own mind.

Nobody is responsible except you. Nobody can make you angry. Nobody can make you happy.

Once you realise this much, that's when you awaken to the real beauty of life.

🌿One should regard everything as of the form of Siva and Sakti. Who has always this conviction, is liberated while living. Time can never take him away who always contemplates on Śiva.

🌿The yogi functioning freely by means of union with divine consciousness achieves equality with the absolute free will of Bhairava. He becoming Svacchanda moves about freely and enjoys full freedom.

🌿भूतपूर्वं कृतं कर्म कर्तारमनुतिष्ठति। यथा धेनुसहस्रेषु वत्सो विन्दन्ति मातरम्॥

A calf recognizes its mother among thousands of cows; similarly, previous deeds get their doer.

~Garuda Puran, 1/113/54

[Natural law regarding our actions is simply irrefutable. So we have to do every action carefully as if someone is gazing at us. This will ensure that we do not deviate from the path of truth. If we do not add up the miseries of wrong actions, we will slowly and firmly transcend the cause and effect cycle of action and its result.]

🌿द्वे पदे बन्धमोक्षाय नममेति ममेति च। ममेति बध्यते जन्तुर्नममेति प्रमुच्यते॥

There are two reasons for bondage and salvation - "it is mine and it is not mine". A living being with the thinking "this is mine" binds himself and the one with the thinking, "this is not mine" becomes free.

~Garuda Puran, 2/49/93

[When we see nothing as me or for mine, it marks the beginning of everlasting freedom. Our associations with the objects, other people, body, and mind put us in bondage. If we free ourselves from these associations and attachments, the path of liberation appears before us wide and open.]

🌿Lord Dattatreya Jayanti🌿

Dattatreya is the universal Guru, isn’t he? And he has said that the whole world was his Guru.

If you look at evil you feel you should not do it. So he said evil also was his Guru. If you see good, you would wish to do it; so he said that good also was his Guru; both good and evil, he said, were his Gurus.

It seems that he asked a hunter which way he should go, but the latter ignored his question, as he was intent upon his aim to shoot a bird above.

Dattatreya saluted him, saying, "You are my Guru! Though killing the bird is bad, keeping your aim so steadfast in shooting the arrow as to ignore my query is good, thereby teaching me that I should keep my mind steadfast and fixed on Ishwara. You are therefore my Guru."

In the same way he looked upon everything as his Guru, till in the end he said that his physical body itself was a Guru, as its consciousness does not exist during sleep and the body that does not exist should therefore not be confused with the soul - dehatmabhavana [the feeling that the body is the soul]. Therefore that too was a Guru for him.

While he looked upon the whole world as his Guru, the whole world worshipped him as its Guru.

~Sri Ramana Maharshi

_____________

Lord Dattatreya gives secret of highest knowledge to Lord Parshurama through the medium of tales.

Tripura literally means the three cities. They are the states - Jagrat, Swapna and Sushupti [Waking, Dream and Sleep States]. The undercurrent of consciousness in all of them remaining unaffected is metaphorically called the Resident Mistress, by the name, Sri Tripura.

It is an ancient Prime text on Advaita in Sanskrit and was highly commended by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi for study by seekers, who sincerely seek to know the true nature of the Self.

This book is not to be picked up, read through and put away. The verses are full of Divine nectar which will quench the thirst of any earnest seeker who repeatedly reflects on their meaning and in right earnest attempts to implement the teachings.

Through fascinating stories and analogies the entire spectrum of spiritual pursuit and attainment is laid out in clear terms for the aspirant.

🌿The ordinary human being does not know what love is. When somebody gives you pleasure you tend to think you love that person. But in reality it is yourself you love - your ego has been pleased by other person's attention, that is all. Would you go on 'loving' that person if he should cease to give you pleasure?

🌿Sometimes everything is going along nicely and we think the world and our place in it is all right; but then a time comes when everything seems to go against us. That is a lesson given to strengthen us, to bring out our hidden powers. If you never get angry at life’s reverses, or at their human instigators, you can see your way more clearly through whatever is going on around you.
If you can retain your inner peace, therein lies your supreme victory. No matter how you are situated in life, never feel justified in losing your peace. When that is gone and you cannot think clearly, you have lost the battle.

🌿Unless there is some relationship or karmic connection, nobody goes anywhere. If any men or creatures come to you, do not discourteously drive them away, but receive them well and treat them, with due respect. Shri Hari [God] will be certainly pleased, if you give water to the thirsty, bread to the hungry, clothes to the naked, and your verandah [courtyard] to strangers for sitting and resting.

🌿God lives in all beings and creatures, whether they be serpents or scorpions. He is the great wirepuller of the world, and all beings, serpents, scorpions etc. Obey His command. Unless He wills it, nobody can do any harm to others. The world is all dependent on Him, and no one is independent. So we should take pity and love all creatures, leave off adventurous fights and killings and be patient. The lord [God] is the protector of all, and always does what is needful for one's greater good.

~Shirdi Sai Baba

🌿Under God's dispensation now and again, man has to suffer violent blows. Do you know that these blows are God's Grace? Without them it would be impossible for the person concerned to experience a change of heart at this particular stage.

🌿Try always to bear in mind that God sends all the worries of life for purifying yourself.

🌿Always remain calm and remember that whatever God does at any time is beneficent. When circumstances change in the course of events, what is there to worry about? Everything that happens at any moment happens by His will.

🌿The mind has been engaged so far in [sense] objects. Now, engage it towards God. You’ll see the path will gradually open up. Thoughts of sense objects are sure to leave, the veil will also gradually disappear. What is impermanent will certainly be destroyed.

The main reason why spiritual path seems difficult and spiritual growth seems like a struggle, is that deep-down, you're still not really convinced that divinity and happiness lies within you.

If you analyse yourself deeply enough, you will see that a significant portion of your mind still likes to indulge into the tendencies and habits that bind it and cripple it down. Or rather, a part of you is still helplessly in love with the chains of your own bondage.

See to it that if you really had a firm and complete conviction and understanding that the source of creation, which is of the nature of infinite bliss, is within you, your mind wouldn't wander anywhere else even for a second. Enlightenment thus would have been a matter of moment(s) and not lifetime(s).

Disciple.: How is it that even scholars in Vedanta have not succeeded in the pursuit of enquiry?

Master.: Though they always study Vedanta and give lessons to others yet in the absence of desirelessness they do not practise what they have learnt.

D.: And what do they do otherwise?

M.: Like a parrot they reproduce the Vedantic jargon but do not put the teachings into practice.

D.: What does Vedanta teach?

M.: The Vedanta teaches a man to know that all but the non-dual Brahman is laden with misery, therefore to leave off all desires for
enjoyment, to be free from love or hate, thoroughly to cut the knot of the ego appearing as 'I', you, he, this, that, mine and yours, to rid himself of the notion of 'I' and 'mine', to live unconcerned with the pairs of opposites as heat and cold, pain and pleasure, etc., to remain fixed in the perfect knowledge of the equality of all and making no distinction of any kind, never to be aware of anything but Brahman, and always to be experiencing the Bliss of the nondual Self. Though Vedanta is read and well understood, if dispassion is not practised, the desire for pleasures will not fade away. There is no dislike for pleasing things and the desire for them cannot leave the person. Because desire is not checked, love, anger, etc., the ego or the 'false-I' in the obnoxious body, the sense of possession represented by 'I' or 'mine' of things agreeable to the body, the pairs of opposites like pleasure and pain, and false values, will not disappear. However well read one may be, unless the teachings are put into practice, one is not really learned. Only like a parrot the man will be repeating that Brahman alone is real and all else is false.

D.: Why should he be so?

M.: The knowers say that like a dog delighting in offal, this man also delights in external pleasures. Though always busy with Vedanta, reading and teaching it, he is no better than a mean dog. Having read all the shastras and well grounded in them, they grow conceited that they are all knowing, accomplished and worthy of respect; filled with love and hate they presume themselves respectable; they are only packasses esteemed for carrying heavy loads over long distances in difficult and tortuous ways. They need not be considered as regards non-dual Truth. In the same strain Vasishta has spoken much more to Rama.

I will tell you a secret. No matter what you are doing, neither let the past come up in your mind; nor let the future bother you.

Because the past is gone, and the future hasn't come up yet. When you live just in the memories, or in the imagination, you're living in that which is non-existent.

So when you are living in the non-existential, you are obviously missing the existential. Naturally you will suffer, as you will miss your whole life.

Have you ever sat very silently, not with your attention fixed on anything, not making an effort to concentrate, but with the mind very quiet, really still? Then you hear everything, don’t you? You hear the far off noises as well as those that are nearer and those that are very close by, the immediate sounds—which means really that you are listening to everything. Your mind is not confined to one narrow little channel. If you can listen in this way, listen with ease, without strain, you will find an extraordinary change taking place within you, a change which comes without your volition, without your asking; and in that change there is great beauty and depth of insight.
