🌿श्रीगोप्य ऊचुः - भजतोऽनुभजन्त्येक एक एतद्विपर्ययम्। नोभयांश्च भजन्त्येक एतन्नो ब्रूहि साधु भोः॥

The Gopis say, "There are some persons who love only those who love them. And, some persons love even those who do not love them back. Still, others are those who neither love those who love them nor those who do not love them. O dear, can you tell us who is the best among these?"

🌿श्रीभगवानुवाच - मिथो भजन्ति ये सख्यः स्वार्थैकान्तोद्यमा हि ते। न तत्र सौहृदं धर्मः स्वार्थार्थं तद्धि नान्यथा॥

Lord Krishna says, "Those, who love only those who love them, love falsely. Their reciprocation is based only on their self-interest without any real companionship. Know their conduct to be arisen out of selfishness and there is no other reason.

🌿भजन्त्यभजतो ये वै करुणाः पितरो यथा। धर्मो निरपवादोऽत्र सौहृदं च सुमध्यमाः॥

Those, who love others who don't love them back, do it due to their compassion like our parents. O slender girls, there is righteousness and companionship without exception in this type of love.

🌿भजतोऽपि न वै केचिद् भजन्त्यभजतः कुतः। आत्मारामा ह्याप्तकामा अकृतज्ञा गुरुद्रुहः॥

And those, who do not love even the persons who love them, why they do not love them? They are of two types, those who are blessed within and do not desire anything anymore, and others are those who are ungrateful and disloyal to their teachers".

🍃🌸DESIRELESS WORSHIP🌸🍃

Even though one may be knowledgeable, by giving up the worship of God with attributes, one becomes unsuccessful in realizing Brahman. Therefore, one should never abandon saguna worship, the worship of God with attributes.

~Dasbodh, Chapter 10, Sub-chapter 7

______________________________________

If saguna worship is given up, the mind only indulges in worldly pursuits. If one goes to the temple of a saint, one becomes free from desires. If one abandons saguna worship, knowledge becomes impure. Thereby, one becomes a failure. This means that saguna worship is the food for Knowledge. There is nothing in all the three worlds to equal desireless worship. Desireless worship thus calls for extraordinary ability. It is service without payment. Only then does one's nature become truly desireless. Bhajan (worship) is to be done without any motive. If the Bhajan is desireless, Self-Knowledge results. Such a one is greater than even God.

Only the knowledgeable person can worship without desire. The ignorant person worships with some motive. One who realizes the Self and still worships without desire is indeed the greatest. If the jiva is told to do a certain thing, he will not do it. He always wants some benefit or gain. Desireless worship is the only way to achieve greatness. Through desireless worship, one becomes the Lord. See for yourself the difference between worldly benefits and Godhood.

It is indeed great to attain Godhood. Therefore, never abandon saguna worship. Only by worshipping the Master/God can one realize the Self. Only the Sadguru/God is the doer, the non-doer, and the extraordinary doer.

The power of God is beyond words. He can do things that nobody can ever imagine. All this power is achieved by desireless worship. Attainment of Self-Knowledge depends upon you. It is mainly nourished by devotion to the Master/God and saguna worship. Then, automatically the light of the Self shines forth. The sun never leaves the earth in darkness. The sun nurtures the earth. Thus, you should enhance your Knowledge of Brahman. It will then automatically be strengthened.

If someone gives you respect, assign it to the Sadguru/God. If some one bows down to you, understand that it is for the Sadguru/God. People are always ready to fool you. A diamond can only be set in gold. It is never set in iron. God has reserved a safe and comfortable place for those who are devotees of His or their Master.

🪔SHUBH DEEPAWALI🪔

🌼The Conquest of Hell [Naraka] The Puranas say that Lord Narayana has killed the demon [of misery], Naraka-Asura. This demon is none other than the one who lives as “I am this body, the source of misery”. One who seeks Naraka-Asura’s [i.e., the ego’s] source, and thus annihilates him, is truly Lord Narayana Himself.

🌼The Deepavali-bath, which is taken by all people on the fourteenth moon in remembrance of the conquest of Naraka, signifies the bath of Jnana, which is taken after destroying the ego Naraka-Asura, by searching for his source.

The above two verses were summarised in the following verse by Sri Bhagavan:

🌿He who kills Narakasura [the ego]
with the Wheel [i.e.weapon] of Jnana,
by enquiring, “Where is the source of Narakasura, who rules over Narakaloka, this wretched body, as ‘I’?”, is Lord Narayana; and that day [of the ego’s destruction] is the auspicious day of the fourteenth moon.

🌿Deepavali signifies the great Self-Effulgence which shines after destroying the reflected light [i.e. the ego], Narakasura, who was ruling this filthy body, which is the form of hell, as ‘I’.

🌿Deepavali signified the shining of Self after the destruction, through enquiry, of the greatest sinner, Naraka [the ego], who took the abode of this filthy body, which is the form of hell, as ‘I’.

🌿He is Narakasura [a demon] who feels attached in the thought that he is the body. That attachment to the body itself is a Naraka [hell].

🌿The life of a person who has that attachment, even if he be a Maharaja, is hellish. Destroying the attachment to the body, and the Self shining by itself, as Self, is Deepavali.

🌿He is the king of hell who says that he is the body which is hell itself. He is Narayana who ascertains who Naraka is, and destroys him with His vision of wisdom, Jnana-Drishti. That is the auspicious day of Narakachathurdasi.

🌿The false belief that this hell-like house called body is me, is Naraka himself. To destroy that false belief and let the self shine as Self, is Deepavali.

Correcting oneself is correcting the whole world. Sun is simply bright, it does not correct anyone. Because it's bright, the whole world is full of light. Transforming yourself is the means of giving light to the whole world.

CONVERSATIONS WITH ANNAMALAI SWAMI

Question: I meditate a lot but most of the time I don't seem to get any results. When I cannot quieten my mind, is all my effort wasted, or will it bear fruit at some future time?

Annamalai Swami: Most minds are like wet wood: they need a long period of drying out before they catch fire. While your mind is on the Self it is drying out. When it is on the world it is getting wet again. The effort you expend in keeping the mind turned towards the Self is never wasted. It is only wasted when you lose interest and revert to your old mental habits. Don't worry if your efforts do not produce immediate results. Sooner or later you will get your reward.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa once told a story :-

Two sadhus who were friends agreed to do intense tapas together to attain the darshan of Kali. They had agreed beforehand that if she did not appear to them they would both kill themselves.

Their tapas was so intense that at about 1 a.m. one night the Goddess Kali appeared before them. One of the sadhus enjoyed the bliss which came from having darshan of the Goddess but the other lost consciousness and became comatose.

The man who was awake became very concerned about his unconscious friend and asked Kali, 'We were both doing the same sadhana, yet when you came to give us darshan my friend became totally unconscious and went into a coma. Why this partiality? It does not seem fair because we have both done an equal amount of tapas.'

Kali replied: 'You have been doing this tapas for several lifetimes. In the past, you lost consciousness just like this man. You can stay conscious now because of your previous practices and because your karma is finished. Your friend still has a lot of karma to experience: one day when he has finished it all he will have the same conscious experience that you are now having.’

🌿The individual who, instead of his own rightful earnings, considers it better to fraudulently live off another's just labour, has not realized that what the Lord has given is specific to his needs. As he acquires name and fame, he increasingly uses force or fraud in order to usurp the rights of those lesser or lower than him, while hoarding his own wealth, or spending it uselessly, or doing other bad deeds. Such a being subsequently has to pay those from whom he has taken, and pays it by taking birth repeatedly— by becoming an animal, cow, or donkey, again and again. So understand, my son, that apart from your rightful earnings, you are never to use what belongs to others. This is the first step on the spiritual ladder. Even if you are the king of the whole world, you are still to eat only the rightful fruit of your own labour.

🌿One ought always to live one's means. Try to adjust your budget and reduce your wants. There can be no end to a person's desire. One can increase one's wants as much as one likes, and one may also reduce them to the minimum. The richest person is one who has no desires.

🌿When you serve a less fortunate person in any way, material or spiritual, you are not doing him a favour. In fact, he who receives your help does you a favour by accepting what you give, and thereby helps you to evolve and move closer to the Divine, Blissful Being who in reality is within you and in the hearts of all beings.

🌿A minute of kindness is more precious than a hundred years of intense austerities.

🌿The Master had said to ‘M,’ “Do not advise people if you cannot follow the same advice. Do not talk on something if you have no personal experience.” Wonderful teaching indeed! If only teachers follow this teaching what a lovely world this would be!

🌿The key to clear thinking and problem solving is therefore an alert but relaxed mind. Concentration is not tension. On the contrary, it is possible only when the mind is relaxed but attentive.

UNIVERSE IS A MERE IMAGINATION

🌿[1-6] Having heard the sage’s son, Mahasena began to think clearly and seriously; he concluded the world to be dreamlike and overcame his grief. Growing strong in mind, he was not perturbed. Then he asked his companion: Great and wise saint! You know this world and beyond. I do not believe that there is anything that you do not know. Please answer me now: How can you say that the whole is pure imagination? However much I may imagine, my imagination does not materialise. But you have created a universe by the force of your will. And yet, how do time and space differ in these creations? Please tell me. On being thus asked, the sage’s son replied:

🌿[7] The will conceives either effectively or ineffectively, according to whether it is uniform or broken up by indecision.

🌿[8] Do you not know this world to be the result of Brahma’s desire? This looks real and permanent because the original desire is so powerful.

🌿[9] Whereas the world of your creation no one takes seriously, and your own mistrust makes it useless.

🌿[10-15] Conceptions materialise for various reasons as follows: by virtue of the natural function, as with Brahma - the Creator; by the possession of live-gems, as with yakshas and rakshasas (classes of celestial beings); by the use of herbs, as with Gods (nectar is reputed to contain the extracts of superb herbs); by the practice of yoga, as with yogis; by the miraculous power of incantations, as with a few siddhas; by the force of penance, as with some Sages; and by virtue of boons, as with the Architect of the universe (Viswakarma). One should forget the old associations in order to make one’s new conception effective, and this endures only so long as it is not obstructed by the old one. A conception is forceful unless obstructed by an antecedent one, and thus destroyed. It is effective only when forceful; in that way even great things may be achieved.

🌿[16] Your conceptions do not materialise for the aforesaid reason. Therefore you must practise the focusing of thought if you desire your own creations to endure.

🌿[54] The King said :- O Brâhman! What is the nature of Her? and what is the Supreme Force? What is the Cause of this creation? And where is Her highest place? Kindly narrate all these to me.

🌿[55-66] The Rishi said :- O King! She is beginningless; therefore She had no origin at any time; that Highest Devî is Eternal and She is always the Cause of all Causes. O King! She resides in all the beings as the essential vital Force; deprived of that Force, every being is reduced to a dead carcass. She is pervading as the Universal Force of Consciousness in all the beings. The form of this Sakti is the form made up of consciousness itself, the Brahman. Her appearances and disappearances at times are simply for serving the purposes of the Gods.

O King! Whenever the Devas and men worship Her, Ambikâ makes Her appearance visible to destroy their pains and sufferings. She assumes various forms and possesses various powers. That Highest Ishvari comes down of Her free will to serve Her some purpose or other. She is not like the Devas, under the control of Daiva or Fate; She is not under the influence of Time [as both Fate and Time are created by Her]. She puts always every being to action according to his capacity.

Purusa is not the Doer; He is simply the Witness. This whole Universe is the object - seen. That Devî is the Mother of all this that is witnessed. She is the Manifested and She is the Unmanifested and She is the Effect also. She alone is the Actress and manifests thus the world and thus gives the colouring to the Purusa. When the Purusa is coloured thus, She destroys quickly these worlds. It is said that Brahma, Visnu and Mahesha are respectively the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer of the world; but this is merely a statement; really they are merely instruments in Her hands.

Bhagavatî has created them in reality for Her Pastime and stationed them in their respective posts. She has bestowed to them Her part manifestations, i.e., Sarasvati to Brahma, Laksmi to Visnu, and Girija to Mahesha and has thus rendered them more powerful. They, the lords of the Devas, always meditate and worship Her as the Creatrix, Preservrix and Destructrix of this Universe. O King! I have thus described to you, as far as my intelligence and knowledge go, the holy greatness and the excellent glory of Her.

🌿Be sincere in your practice, words, and deeds. You will feel blessed! His blessings are always showered on all creatures on the earth. It is needless to ask for it. Practise meditation sincerely and you will understand His infinite grace. God wants sincerity, truthfulness and love. Outward verbal effusions do not touch Him.

🌿How many are there who truly want to realize God? Where is that earnestness? They, no doubt, profess great devotion and longing, but they feel satisfied when they get even a tiny bit of enjoyment. They say, ‘Ah, how kind is God!’

🌿If you don’t call upon God—indeed many people never even remember Him—what does it matter to Him? It is your own misfortune. Such is the Maya of God, He keeps them ignorant of Him saying, ‘They are happy enough, let them be so!’

🌿I tell you one thing—if you want peace, do not find fault with others. Rather see your own faults. Learn to make the world your own. No one is a stranger, my child; the whole world is your own.

🌿One must live carefully. Every action produces its results. It is not good to use harsh words towards others or be responsible for their suffering.

There is a basic premise in the Vedas and the UpanishadsKnow that one reality through which every other thing in this world can be known. e.g. If we know gold, we know every ornament made up of gold, it is gold only but moulded in a different form. The insentient or non-living entities are made up of some fundamental substances like earth, water, fire, wind, and space. The sentient or living entities, due to their similar characteristics, also seem to be made up of some sentient entity though they are not directly observable by our senses. However, all these entities, whether living or dead, spring forth from a single, conscious and invariant reality. This reality is called Brahman or the Supreme Lord. A doubt might arise how from a living being can a non-living entity arise? Just as a spider generates its web out of itself or in hair and nails grow in us automatically, other seemingly non-living entities can also emanate from conscious reality.

🍃Therefore, let the pure-hearted learn to drop all activities [mental and physical]; as activities are contrary to knowledge, their combination with knowledge is not possible. Quieting all activities of the senses and mind perceptions, one should always be engaged in contemplation upon the Self.

🍃As long as one identifies with one's body as a result of the play of Maya, so long one must perform the sacred work prescribed by the Vedas. Thereafter, with the help of the sruti declaration of negation, [neti-neti] "not this, not this"- one must learn to rise above one's body identity and realize the Self-and then give up all work.

🍃When the shining, direct knowledge of the Self - the destroyer of the difference between Paramatma and jiva - arises in the heart of an individual, then alone Maya, the cause for the jiva's samsara, disappears instantaneously, along with its effects, all misapprehensions.
