ππΌSHUBH GURU-PURNIMAπΌπ
β¨
πͺAs Explained by Sri Ramanaπͺ
I have not said that the Guru is not necessary. But a Guru need not always be in human form. First a person thinks that he is inferior and that there is a superior, all-knowing, all powerful God who controls his own and the worldβs destiny and worships him or does bhakti (devotion). When he reaches a certain stage and becomes fit for enlightenment, the same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him onward. That Guru comes only to tell him, βThat God is within yourself. Dive within and realizeβ. God, Guru and the Self are the same.
Realization is the result of the Masterβs (Guruβs) grace, more than teachings, lectures, meditations, etc. They are only secondary aids, whereas the former is the primary and essential cause. Guruβs grace is always there. You imagine it to be something somewhere high up in the sky, far away and which has to descend. It is really inside you in your Heart, and the moment, by any of the methods, you effect subsidence or merger of the mind into its source, the grace rushes forth, spouting as from a spring from within you.
Contact with jnanis is good. They will work through silence. A Guru is not the physical form. Hence His contact remains even after the physical form of the Guru vanishes. After your bhakti to God has matured you, God comes in the shape of a Guru and from outside pushes your mind inside, while being inside as Self He draws you there from within. Such a Guru is needed generally, though not for very rare and advanced souls.
One can go to another Guru after oneβs Guru passes away. But after all, Gurus are one, as none of them are the form. Mental contact is always the best. Satsangh means association with Sat or Reality. One who knows or has realized Sat is also regarded as Sat. Such association is absolutely necessary for all. Adi Sankara has said, βIn all the three worlds there is no boat like satsangh to carry one safely across the ocean of births and deaths.β
Guru not being confined to physical, His contact will continue to those in need, even after His form vanishes. If one Jnani exists in the world, His influence will be felt by or benefit all people in the world, and not simply His immediate disciples. As described in "Vedanta Chudamani", all the people in the world can be put under four categories: The Guruβs disciples, bhaktas, those who are indifferent to Him and those who are hostile to Him. All these will be benefited by the existence of the Jnani β each in his own way and to various degrees.

ββπΏIt is the Jiva, a βreflectionβ of the Self, which is affected by the pain and pleasure of this transmigratory life, but not the real Self [Atman]. This understanding is called knowledge. It is achieved through viveka, discrimination.
πΏTherefore one should always enquire into the nature of the world, the individual Self and the supreme Self. When the ideas of Jiva and Jagat [world] are negated, the pure Atman alone remains.
πΏBy negation it does not mean that the world and Jiva cease to be perceptible to the senses, it means the conviction of their illusory character. Otherwise people would be automatically liberated in deep sleep or in a faint.

My child, remember that My sport is unerring. Not one movement shall be in vain. Not one effort shall fail at last. Think that it was for My pleasure that you came into this world! When the 'night' falls, when this 'play' ends and when My desire is accomplished, I shall withdraw you to Myself. Ask nothing. Resist nothing. Plan nothing. Have no worries or doubts. Surrender with faith and dance to My tune with love. Let My will and grace flow through you, as the ocean through an empty shell. π

ββ¨ MAYA AS THE LIBERATING POWERβ¨
βοΈ In God there are both Vidya Maya and Avidya Maya. The Vidya Maya takes man towards God, whereas the Avidya Maya leads him astray. Knowledge, devotion, dispassion, compassionβall these are expressions of Vidya Maya; only with their help can one reach God.
βοΈ It is Maya which reveals Brahman. Without Maya, who could have known Brahman? Without knowing Sakti, the manifested power of God, there is no means of knowing Him.
βοΈ It is only due to Maya that the attainment of supreme knowledge and final beatitude becomes possible for us. Otherwise who could even dream of all this? From Maya alone spring duality and relativity; beyond Maya there is neither the enjoyer nor the object of enjoyment.
βοΈ The cat catches her kitten with her teeth and they are not hurt; but when a mouse is so caught, it dies. Thus Maya never kills the devotee, though it destroys others.

This is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the 8th Divine Incarnation. It falls on the 8th day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrapada [Aug-Sept]. This is one of the greatest of all Hindu festivals. Lord Krishna was born at midnight. A 24-hour fast is observed today.
The Lord appeared when the moon entered the house of Vrishabha at the constellation of the star Rohini, on Wednesday, the 8th day of the second fortnight of the month of Sravana, which corresponds to the month of Bhadrapada Krishnapaksha according to the Barhaspatyamana, in the year of Visvavasu, i.e. 3227 BC.
Study the Bhagavatam and the Pancharatras, which are equal to the Upanishads. You will know all about the glory of Lord Krishna, His Lilas and superhuman deeds. The eighth avatara, Krishna, who has become the Beloved of India and the world at large, had a threefold objective :-
πΏTo destroy the wicked demons.
πΏTo play the leading role in the great war fought on the battlefield of Kurukshetra [where he delivered His wonderful message of the Gita].
πΏTo become the centre of a marvellous development of the Bhakti schools of India.
There is no true science except devotion to Lord Krishna. That man is wealthy indeed who loves Radha and Krishna. There is no sorrow other than lack of devotion to Krishna. He is the foremost of the emancipated who loves Krishna. The Name, virtues and Lilas divine pastimes of Krishna are the chief things to be remembered. The Lotus Feet of Radha and Krishna are the chief objects of meditation.
Devotion is the chief means of attaining Lord Krishna. Bhakti kindles love for the Lord. When love is directed towards Krishna, man is freed from the bondage of the world. Though Lord Krishna appeared in a human body, He had a divine body not composed of the five elements. He did not take any birth here in the usual sense of the term. He did not die. He appeared and disappeared through His Yoga Maya as He has declared in the Gita. This is a secret, known only to His devotees, yogis and sages.
Avatars of God appear for special reasons under special circumstances. Whenever there is much unrighteousness, confusion and disorder set in on account of adharma and baffle the well-ordered progress of mankind, whenever the balance of human society is upset by selfish, ruthless and cruel beings, whenever adharma and unrighteousness prevail, whenever the foundations of social organisations are undermined, the great Incarnation of God appears in order to re-establish righteousness and to restore peace.
An Incarnation is the descent of God for the ascent of man. The work done by the Incarnation of God and His teachings produce a benign influence on human beings and help them in their upward divine unfoldment and Self-realisation. The Incarnation comes to reveal the divine nature of man and makes him rise above the petty materialistic life of passion and egoism.
Krishna has played various roles in His Life. He was Arjunaβs charioteer. He was an excellent statesman. He was a master musician; he gave lessons even to Narada in the art of playing the veena. The music of His flute thrilled the hearts of the Gopis and everyone else. He was a cowherd in Vrindavan and Gokul. He exhibited miraculous powers even as a child. He killed many demons. He revealed His Cosmic Form to His mother, Yasoda. He performed the Rasa Lila, the secret of which can only be understood by devotees like Narada, Gauranga, Radha and the Gopis. He taught the supreme Truth of Yoga, Bhakti and Vedanta to Arjuna and Uddhava. He had mastered every one of the sixty-four fine arts. Therefore, He is regarded as the full manifestation of God.
~Swami Sivananda
@HinduismAsItIs wishes you all a very auspicious Janamashtami. Today, meditate on the divine form of Sri Krishna, read Sri Bhagvatam, sing His stotras, hymns and do japa of His name, to whatever extent possible. May by His grace, we all be blessed with the highest good, bliss and wisdom! Hare Krishna! ππ
