Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّهُ drops wisdom in Laṭāʾif al-Maʿārif (p. 240):

> "The four Imams explicitly stated that seeking knowledge is superior to voluntary prayers (Nafl), and prayer is superior to voluntary fasting. By logical precedence, knowledge is superior to fasting. For knowledge is a lamp that illuminates the darkness of ignorance and desire. Whoever travels a path without a lamp cannot be safe from falling into a ruinous pit and perishing."

Ibn Sīrīn adds:

> "A people abandoned knowledge and took to prayer niches, praying and fasting without knowledge. By Allah, no one acts without knowledge except that their corruption outweighs their rectification."
