Something I don't hear as often brought up when we're talking about density and walkable cities is how practical this kind of dense building is for heat management as well.
During the permaculture design class I took last year we looked at a couple case studies of various building techniques around the world, all of which were tailored specifically to live with that environment. Tropical houses lifted off the ground and build with air flow in mind, desert and Mediterranean buildings built *very closely* together to shield from the heat.
As we go forward into a warming future, our large ass asphalt roads and lack of shade thanks to suburban buildings built far apart are going to make heat management worse - and let's not forget that many of those houses already aren't built with passive energy conservation/capture in mind.
