📍Veracity /vəˈræs.ə.ti/ (n.)

🌟صحت، صداقت، راستی
🔵Meaning

Veracity sounds like some kind of disease you don’t want to catch, but in fact, it means truthfulness. If you question the veracity of a statement or story, you wonder whether it is truthful or accurate.

✳️More about the Word

Veracity is linked to the adjective veracious or “truthful.” But don’t confuse veracious with voracious. A voracious person eats very large amounts of food. If you were veracious, or “truthful,” you’d tell them they look fat.

❇️Examples:

📍Doubts were cast on the veracity of her alibi.

📍Unless you get your information from a credible website, you should doubt the veracity of the facts until you have confirmed them elsewhere.

📍The teacher doubted the student’s veracity when he turned in a paper that had obviously been written by someone else.

Describe A Good Law In Your Country – IELTS Speaking Cue Card

#ielts #ieltsspeaking
#ایلتس

🔵Describe a good law in your country.

📍You should say:
👇🏻👇🏻
What is the law?
How you came to know about this law?
Whom does it affect?
Why is it good?

🛑Sample Answer
👇🏻
❇️(What is the law?) It is good news that India has made corporate social responsibility a law since April 2014. This law makes it compulsory for companies that exceed certain profit margins to spend two percent of their profits towards worthy objectives. It is an excellent initiative, as it will help to reduce the rich-poor distinction to some extent.

❇️(How you came to know about this law?) (Whom does it affect?) I read newspapers daily. One such day in April 2014, I read about this law when I was skimming the headlines. It is an amendment to the already existing Companies Act, 2013. It is targeted towards the corporate companies which amass wealth. India is home to several IT giants, and this law had been enforced at just the right time.

✳️(Why is it good?) Many companies have been found to be irregular in paying their taxes. So this law is a thoughtful approach to involve these companies in nation-building. There are honourable intentions behind the implementation of the law. Companies will be spending some money towards a noble cause such as eradication of illiteracy, improving health conditions etc. This law will help every company to add purpose and meaning to their establishment. Be it direct involvement or implementation through partnered associations, this law has ensured that the poorer sections of the society receive some tangible benefits. Some companies have implemented programs involving their employees. So people at work can also feel happy about contributing to the community in some manner. When the companies work hand-in-hand with NGOs, we can expect greater relief programs for the poor.

The whole world is eager to know the productivity level of this implementation. It has already created a stir and is likely to be more successful. I’m sure that many more countries will follow suit.

🔵Describe A Place You Visited When You Were A Child – IELTS Speaking Cue Card

📍Describe a place you visited when you were a child.

🌟You should say:
👇🏻👇🏻
Where did you go?
When did you go there?
What did you do there?
And explain why you would/or would not visit this place again?

❇️Sample Answer

(Where did you go?) (When did you go there?) Our family tours every year. My parents have taken me to the nook and corner of India. But there is one place which is still fresh in my memory. It is Bombay. I visited this place with my parents when I was only seven years old. My Dad amused me by saying there were tasty vada pavs in Bombay, which we could enjoy. So I was very much excited to go there.

(What did you do there?) The journey was by train, and I enjoyed sightseeing all the way. On reaching the place, we hired a taxi and reached our hotel. We refreshed ourselves and visited many places which I remember vaguely. But there is one place which I cannot forget. It is the Arabian sea. Then my school had not begun geography classes, but my father had explained something with a toy globe which I tried to recollect and relate. We sailed in a cruise, and my mom was clasping my hand for the fear that I would fall. The sea breeze hit my face, and I felt great. I had learnt about sharks and whales and was expecting to find one. It was summer when we went there, so the sea was a shimmering blue.

(Explain why you would/ or would not visit this place again?) Years later, when I think of it, it seems to me like a dream. As I grew up, I learnt many things about the sea and also watched it on television. It has a majestic aura with which it keeps pulling me towards it. It is undoubtedly one of the best gifts of mother nature to mankind. Now that I’ve enough knowledge about it, I want to go to the sea again.

📍Against the Grain
✳️Definition
: To do something differently from the standard way most people do it.
✳️This idiom means to do things one’s own way, going against the normal rules or expectations for how that thing is usually done.
برخلاف میل یا طینت کسی/عمل کردن بر خلاف عقیده/ رفتار کردن بر خلاف میل

🔵Here is an example of the idiom being used by two college students.
👇🏻👇🏻
Regina: It’s Valentine’s day. Why aren’t you wearing pink?

Ginny: I just didn’t feel like it.

Regina: But everyone wears pink today. It’s a holiday!

Ginny: I guess I just like to go against the grain.

🔵In this example, two friends discuss an upcoming party
👇🏻👇🏻
Kevin: I can’t believe Amy didn’t invite me to her wedding.

Steve: Yeah, man, I’m sorry to hear that. It probably wasn’t intentional, you know. She probably just forgot.

Kevin: You’re right! I should just show up.

Steve: I don’t know about that.

Kevin: Why shouldn’t I? It’s not illegal.

Steve: No, but it’s certainly against the grain. Why don’t you just let me text her to see if she forgot?

Kevin: All right, fine.
