Press Release: VBA the MVP as Al Rajhi cements his lead

After starting yesterday's stage dead last, Lucas Moraes pulled a blinder by overtaking no fewer than 18 of the 27 cars ahead of him to post the third-fastest time. Third on the road today, the Brazilian nabbed the stage win to reignite his W2RC winning streak. The Toyota Gazoo Racing works driver remains on the overall podium but has trimmed his deficit by almost a minute. Moraes now trails the leader of the rally, Yazeed Al Rajhi, by 4′54″. The Saudi was second on the day, 57 seconds back, after receiving a 1-minute penalty for speeding. Nasser Al Attiyah, stung with 2′50″ in penalties for multiple speeding offences, finished third at 1′56″. The Qatari slipped to 3′19″ from the leader. Juan Cruz Yacopini (Overdrive Racing) lost around 20 minutes following a roll and dropped nearly 35 minutes to the fastest drivers. That incident has scuppered the Argentinian's hopes of a repeat home podium this year, with over 40 minutes now separating him from the leader after the drama on the road to San Juan.

Another day, another victory for Rokas Baciuška in the Challenger class. He put 2′26″ into Marcelo Gastaldi (BBR) and, more importantly, 3′48″ into Nicolás Cavigliasso. The Lithuanian now holds a 10-minute lead over the Argentinian in the standings.

Bombshell in the SSV ranks. As in Portugal, Yasir Seaidan suffered a turbo failure that prevented him from taking the start today. His team was unable to repair it overnight, so the Saudi will be a no-show tomorrow as per the regulations. Meanwhile, Enrico Gaspari scored a double whammy with the stage win and overall lead. The Italian is 1′21″ ahead of the former leader, Ricardo Ramilo (Scuderia Ramilo), and 1′31″ clear of Sebastián Guayasamín (BE Racing). The championship leader's withdrawal has revived the Ecuadorian's title hopes at the Rallye du Maroc.

Loic Bonnevie's message from Argentina to Cross-Country Rally News:

Everything is going well for BBR on the Ruta 40. We are still well received in Argentina, and the landscapes are magnificent. Mechanically, our three Taurus T3max vehicles work perfectly; we just have to adapt to the high altitude. Naza [Nazareno López] is discovering the car and beginning to show us its potential. Marcelo is having a solid race. Dania has worked a lot between Portugal and this race, and she is very consistent and competitive.

🎤Here we are after stage 3 of Ruta 40. It's been an amazing race. I'm having a very good time. So we had two days of very fast rally style tracks, not too much navigation, so that was something a little bit different for us in Rally Raid. I enjoyed it a lot with these nice mountain Twisty roads. We had more rally-raif stuff today, so a little bit more in the open desert, a little bit of navigation.

I enjoyed it a lot. I was getting used to all this reaction, let's say, from the fresh-fresh. We don't have so much of that usually in what I race, but I enjoyed it. By the time we reached refuel, I got a bit more settled with that. And overall, the car's been great. And there's a lot of nice competitors here with a good level. So it's good to have them around and to keep the race close. And overall, it's an amazing event.

🎤Today was really nice. The stage was tricky, it was fast, there was some sand in the moment. The car was perfect. We did a great job. So, we win, we are happy. We are here in San Juan to continue with this.

Press Release: Brabec and Quintero reach for the stars

Seth Quintero claimed his second career win in the Ultimate class. The Toyota Gazoo Racing factory driver prevailed with a gap of 1′09″ over Nasser Al Attiyah and 2′07″ over Yazeed Al Rajhi, who fought hard before fading a bit towards the end. Lucas Moraes, the second Toyota factory driver and winner of yesterday's stage, finished 6′16″ back after opening the road. This second consecutive stage win for TGR brings their season tally to five. Al Rajhi remains ensconced in the overall lead with 2′21″ in hand over Al Attiyah. The two-time world champion and Ruta 40 title holder clawed back 58 seconds from the Saudi. The clash of titans continues. Moraes is still running third, but now 9′03″ back. Quintero is over half an hour off the pace, courtesy of an excursion while attempting to overtake another competitor in stage 1. He did close to within 5 minutes of Sebastián Halpern (X-raid Mini JCW Team) in fourth place, the top-ranked representative of the host nation.

Rokas Baciuška missed out on the Challenger stage win for the first time this week. Nicolás Cavigliasso (Taurus Factory by Wevers) snatched his first win among the W2RC entrants, beating Marcelo Gastaldi (TH-Trucks) and Dania Akeel (BBR). The Lithuanian retained the overall lead by a reduced margin of 5′55″ to Cavigliasso, 9′25″ to the Brazilian and 17′31″ to the Saudi.

Ricardo Ramilo (Ramilo Scuderia) emerged victorious from a day of pandemonium in the SSV class. The Spaniard traded blows second by second with Enrico Gastaldi (TH-Trucks), yesterday's winner, before the Italian crashed out late on — also clearing the way for Sebastián Guayasamín (BE Racing) to sneak through. Ramilo romped home with over 7 minutes to spare, overturning his deficit to go from fourth to first overall. He now has 2′58″ in hand over Gastaldi and 4′16″ over Guayasamín, who dropped one place in the standings and conceded over 3 minutes. Rebecca Busi is fourth at 10′34″.
The Dacia Sandriders: initial Dakar testing complete, next stop Morocco

The Dacia Sandriders team has completed its initial testing phase as part of its ongoing preparations for next January’s Dakar, the ultimate motorsport challenge it will take on for the first time.

Following a systems’ check at the Millbrook Proving Ground in the UK, The Dacia Sandriders spent four days at the Sweet Lamb testing complex in Wales, UK, from May 6-9. The team then headed to Château de Lastours, France, for another four days of intense testing (May 27-31), where the three crews had the opportunity to test the Sandrider, fitted with BF Goodrich tyres, on a rocky and demanding terrain.
Cristina Gutiérrez was behind the wheel of the Sandrider for two days in Wales before Sébastien Loeb, the nine-time world rally champion, took over test and development duties.
Multiple Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah got his first taste of the Sandrider power at Château de Lastours over two days. Sébastien returned to the cockpit for the one and a half days with Cristina called on for the final afternoon of running.
The Dacia Sandriders’ team principal Tiphanie Isnard confirmed that the initial testing phase had exceeded expectations with very few issues experienced by Al-Attiyah, Gutiérrez and Loeb and the organisation’s expert engineers and technicians.
Extensive work is now under way ahead of the first comprehensive test in Morocco from June 28-July 5. That’s when the Sandrider will be put through its paces on terrain similar to what will be encountered during the Dakar, the opening round of the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship in Saudi Arabia from January 3-17, 2025.
