Quetzalcoatl is also known for his role in creating humanity. According to Aztec myth, after the previous worlds (or suns) had been destroyed, Quetzalcoatl went to the underworld, Mictlan, to retrieve the bones of the dead from previous creations. He tricked Mictlantecuhtli, the lord of the underworld, and brought the bones back to the surface.
