Group study or Individual study?

We have seen that CA students prefer group study, as they feel tough to study consistently for longer duration. However, negative ramifications  of group study shouldn’t be overlooked and one has to be cautious therein.

Benefits of Group Study:

*Collaboration and Discussion:* "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." - Helen Keller.
Group study allows students to discuss complex concepts, clarify doubts, and learn from each other's perspectives.

*Motivation and Accountability:* "Surround yourself with people who push you to do better."

Studying in a group can provide motivation and help maintain focus, as members hold each other accountable for progress.

However, following are major limitations of studying in a group, which needs to be handled properly:

*Distractions and Time Management:* "The chain is only as strong as its weakest link."
Group study can be counterproductive if members get distracted easily or have difficulty managing time effectively.

*Differences in Learning Pace:* "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself." - Henry Ford.
Students may have varying learning speeds, leading to either slowing down or leaving some members behind.

*Dependency on Group:* "Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."
Sometimes, students may become overly reliant on the group, hindering their individual growth.

Hence, to address these concerns, following strategies can be useful:

*Establish Clear Goals and Structure:* Set specific study goals for each session and create a structured study plan. This helps in maintaining focus and avoiding distractions during group study sessions.

*Assign Roles and Responsibilities:* Designate different roles to each group member, such as timekeeper, facilitator, or note-taker. This ensures that the study session remains organized and productive.

*Set Ground Rules for Distractions:* Minimize distractions during group study sessions by agreeing on ground rules, such as prohibiting the use of mobile phones or social media during study time and even strictly AVOID chit chat and gossips.

*Combine Group and Individual Study:* Strike a balance between group study and individual study. Allocate time for both approaches, allowing group study to enhance understanding and individual study to focus on personal weaknesses.

*Discuss Challenging Concepts:* Encourage group members to explain challenging concepts to each other. Teaching others reinforces understanding and helps clarify misconceptions.

*Review and Reflect:* At the end of each group study session, review what was covered and reflect on the effectiveness of the session. Discuss what worked well and identify areas for improvement.

Word of the Day

Average Buying Price

It is the average amount an investor has paid to buy shares of a company.

Investors try to buy stocks when the price falls. It helps them reduce the average buying price.
Lower average buying price = higher profit (when the share goes up).

Example:

Say an investor likes a company ABC Ltd. He plans to invest in it for more than 10 years.

The price of this share changes with time — it goes up and down.

But the investor thinks that in 10 years, the price will be at Rs 90.
So, he tries to buy shares whenever he can.

This is how he bought shares of this company:

Jan 2021:
-price = Rs 20 per share
-therefore total price = Rs 4,000

Jan 2022:
-price = Rs 26 per share
-therefore total price = Rs 7,800

Jan 2023:
-price = Rs 18 per share
-therefore total price = Rs 3,600

The average buying price for this stock is:
Avg buying price = (total money paid) divided by (total shares)
Average buying price:
This is = (4,000 + 7,800 + 3,600) / (200 + 300 + 200)
Or, it is = 22
So, Rs 22 is the average buying price in this example.
