๐Ÿ’ The Inner Secrets of Fasting๐Ÿ’

๐Ÿ’ขImam Ibn Qudaamah al-Maqdisee
๐Ÿ’ขMukhtasar Minhaaj ul-Qaasideen (pp. 38-41)
๐Ÿ’ข Part - 2

โ If he were to eat his fill during the first part of the night, he would not make good use of himself for the remainder of the night. In the same way, if he eats to his fill for suhoor, he does not make good use of himself until the afternoon.

โ This is because excessive eating breeds laziness and lethargy. Therefore, the objective of fasting disappears due to one's excessiveness in eating, for what is intended by the fast, is that one savors the taste of hunger and becomes an abandoner of desires.

โ Recommended Fasts

โ As for the recommended fasts, then know that preference for fasting is established in certain virtuous days. Some of these virtuous days occur every year, such as fasting the first six days of the month of Shawaal after Ramadaan, fasting the day of `Arafah, the day of `Aashooraa, and the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram.

โ Some of them occur every month, such as the first part of the month, the middle part of it, and the last part of it. So whoever fasts the first part of the month, the middle part of it, and the last part of it, then he has done well.

โ Some fasts occur every week, and they are every Monday and Thursday.

โ The most virtuous of the recommended fasts is the fast of Dawud (`alayhis salaam). He would fast one day and break his fast the next day. This achieves the following three objectives:

โ The soul is given its share on the day the fast is broken. And on the day of fasting, it completes its worship in full.

โ The day of eating is the day of giving thanks and the day of fasting is the day of having patience.

โ And Faith (Eemaan) is divided into two halves - that of thankfulness and that of patience.
๐Ÿšซ[Note: the Hadith with a similar stament is unauthentic, see adh-Dha`eefah: 625]

โ It is the most difficult struggle for the soul. This is because every time the soul gets accustomed to a certain condition, it transfers itself to that.

โ As for fasting every day, then it has been reported by Muslim, from the Hadith of Abu Qataadah, that `Umar (radhiallahu `anhu) asked the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam):

โ– 'What is the case if one were to fast every day?' So he (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said: "He did not fast nor did he break his fast - or - he did not fast and he did not break his fast."

[sahih Muslim]

โ This is concerning the one who fasts continuously, even during the days in which fasting is forbidden.

โ Characteristics of the most specific fast

โ Know that the one who has been given intellect, knows the objective behind fasting. Therefore, he burdens himself to the extent that he will not be unable to do that which is more beneficial than it.

โ Ibn Mas`ood would fast very little and it is reported that he used to say: "When I fast, I grow weak in my prayer. And I prefer the prayer over the (optional) fast.

โ Some of them (the sahabah) would weaken in their recitation of the Qur'an while fasting. Thus, they would exceed in breaking their fast (i.e. by observing less optional fasts), until they were able to balance their recitation. Every individual is knowledgeable of his condition and of what will rectify it.

๐Ÿ’ขThe Invocation of Allah - Al-Wabil al-Sayyib min al-Kalim al-Tayyib

โ–โโ€ฆLet us return to the commentary on the hadith of Harith (Rady'Allahu Anhu) , where he Prophet (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) speaks of what will rescue a servant from the Foe:

โโ€œAnd [Allah subhanahu wa taala] enjoins upon you the fast. Verily, the similitude of that is a man carrying a sack-full of musk in a crowd of people, all of them marvelling at its fragranceโ€”for the breath of someone fasting is more fragrant to God, Most High, than the scent of musk.โ€

[Tirmidhi, Amthal, 2790; Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, 16542.]

โ The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) uses the image of someone carrying a sack-full of musk concealed from view, hidden under his garments, after the habit of those who carry musk. Fasting is, likewise, hidden from the eyes of men and unperceived by their senses.

โ The fasting person's limbs fast from sins; his tongue fasts from lies, base language and false witness; his stomach fasts from food and drink; and his pudenda fast from union.

โ If he speaks, he says nothing to violate his fast; and if he acts, he does nothing to spoil his fast. All his speech is salutary and wholesome, as are his deedsโ€”like the fragrance one smells while sitting next to the bearer of musk.

โ Anyone who sits with a fasting person benefits from his presence and is safe from false witness, lies, base language and wrongdoing. This is the fast prescribed by the Sacred Law, not simply abstinence from eating and drinking.

โ Hence, a sound hadith states: โ€œWhen someone does not refrain from speaking falsely and the action that springs from it and from ignorance, God does not need him to refrain from food and drink.โ€

[Bukhari, Adab, 5597; Ibn Maajah, Siyam, 1679; also in Bukhari, Sawm, 1770, without the word โ€˜ignoranceโ€™]

โ And in [another] hadith: โ€œSome who fast obtain nothing from it but hunger and thirst.โ€

[Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, 8501,

โ with the ending โ€˜And some may tand for prayer at night and receive nothing from it but sleeplessness.โ€™ Also in Bahyaqi, Shu`ab al-Iman, 3542, with โ€˜standing at nightโ€™ mentioned first.]

โ True fasting is when the limbs fast from sin and the stomach fasts from food and drink. As food and drink can break the fast or spoil it, so sins can cut off its reward and spoil its fruits, as if one had not fasted at all.

๐Ÿ’ PART - 1

๐Ÿ”ฉThree Grades

โ–โ It should be known that there are three grades of Fasting:

โ ordinary,
โ special and
โ extra-special.

โ– Ordinary Fasting means abstaining from food, drink and sexual satisfaction.

โ– Special Fasting means keeping one's ears, eyes, tongue, hands and feet -- and all other organs -- free from sin.

โ– Extra-special Fasting means fasting of the heart from unworthy concerns and worldly thoughts, in total disregard of everything but Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala).

โ This kind of Fast is broken by thinking of worldly matters, except for those conducive to religious ends, since these constitute provision for the Hereafter and are not of this lower world.

โ Those versed in the spiritual life of the heart have even said that a sin is recorded against one who concerns himself all day with arrangements for breaking his Fast.

โ Such anxiety stems from lack of trust in the bounty of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), and from lack of certain faith in His promised sustenance.

โ To this third degree belong the Prophets, the true awliya and the intimates of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala). It does not lend itself to detailed examination in words, as its true nature is better revealed in action.

โ It consists in utmost dedication to Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), to the neglect of everything other than Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala). It is bound up with the significance of His words:

โ 'Say: "Allah (sent it down)": then leave them to play in their vain discussions.' [al-An'am,6:91]

๐Ÿ”ฉInward Requirements

โ–โ As for Special Fasting, this is the kind practiced by the righteous. It means keeping all one's organs free from sin and six things are required for its accomplishment:

โ 1. SEE NOT WHAT DISPLEASES ALLAH (SUBHANAHU WA TA'ALA)

โ A chaste regard, restrained from viewing anything that is blameworthy or reprehensible, or that distracts the heart and diverts it from the remembrance of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala).

โ Said the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam):

'The furtive glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Satan, on him be Allah's curse. Whoever forsakes it for fear of God will receive from Him, Great and Glorious is He, a faith the sweetness of which he will find within his heart.'

Jabir (Rady'Allahu Anhu) relates from Anas that Allah's Messenger (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam), said: 'Five things break a man's Fast:

โ lying,
โ backbiting,
โ gossiping,
โ perjury and
โ a lustful gaze.'

๐Ÿšซ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ2. SPEAK NOT...!

โ–โ Guarding one's tongue from idle chatter, lying, gossiping, obscenity, rudeness, arguing and controversy; making it observe silence and occupying it with remembrance of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), and with recitation of Qur'an.

โ This is the fasting of the tongue.

โ Said Sufyan: 'Backbiting annuls the Fast.'

โ Layth quotes Mujahid as saying: 'Two habits annul Fasting: backbiting and telling lies.'

โ The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam), said:

โ "Fasting is a shield; so when one of you is Fasting he should not use foul or foolish talk. If someone attacks him or insults him, let him say:

๐Ÿšซ"I am Fasting, I am Fasting!"'

โ According to Tradition: 'Two women were Fasting during the time of Allah's Messenger, (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam). They were so fatigued towards the end of the day, from hunger and thirst, that they were on the verge of collapsing.

โ They therefore sent a message to Allah's Messenger, (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam), requesting permission to break their Fast.

โ In response, the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam), sent them a bowl and said:

โ "Tell them to vomit into it what they have eaten." One of them vomited and half filled the bowl with fresh blood and tender meat, while the other brought up the same so that they filled it between them.

โ The onlookers were astonished. Then the Prophet, (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam), said:

"These two women have been Fasting from what Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) made lawful to them, and have broken their Fast on what Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), made unlawful to them.

๐Ÿ”ฅThey sat together and indulged in backbiting, and here is the flesh of the people they maligned!"

๐Ÿ’ PART - 4
๐Ÿ’ Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali
๐Ÿ’ Ihya' Ulom ud Din

๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘‚3. HEAR NOT...!

โ–โ Closing one's ears to everything reprehensible; for everything unlawful to utter is likewise unlawful to listen to.

โ That is why Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) , equated the eavesdropper with the profiteer, in His (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) words :

โ "Listeners to falsehood, consumers of illicit gain" [al-Ma'idah, 5:42]

โ Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) , also said:

โ 'Why do their rabbis and priests not forbid them to utter sin and consume unlawful profit?' [al-Ma'idah, 5:63]

โ Silence in the face of backbiting is therefore unlawful. Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), said:

โ 'You are then just like them.' [al-Nisa, 4:140]

โ That is why the Prophet, (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam), said:

๐Ÿ”ฅ"The backbiter and his listener are co-partners in sin."

๐Ÿ’ PART - 5
๐Ÿ’ Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali
๐Ÿ’ Ihya' Ulom ud Din

๐ŸšซโŽ 4. DO NOT...!

โ–โ Keeping all other limbs and organs away from sin: the hands and feet from reprehensible deeds, and the stomach from questionable food at the time for breaking Fast.

โ It is meaningless to Fast -- to abstain from lawful food - only to break one's Fast on what is unlawful. A man who Fast like this may be compared to one who builds a castle but demolishes a city.

โ Lawful food injurious in quantity not in quality, so Fasting is to reduce the former. A person might well give up excessive use of medicine, from fear of ill effects, but he would be a fool to switch to taking poison.

โ The unlawful is a poison deadly to religion, while the lawful is a medicine, beneficial in small doses but harmful in excess.

โ The object of Fasting is to induce moderation. Said the Prophet, (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) :

โ 'How many of those who Fast get nothing from it but hunger and thirst!'

โ This has been taken to mean those who break their Fast on unlawful food.

โ Some say it refers to those who abstain from lawful food, but break their Fast on human flesh through backbiting, which is unlawful.

โ Others consider it an allusion to those who do not guard their organs from sin.

๐Ÿ’ Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali
๐Ÿ’ Ihya' Ulom ud Din

๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿšซ 5. AVOID OVEREATING ๐Ÿšซ

โ–โ Not to over-indulge in lawful food at the time of breaking Fast, to the point of stuffing one's belly.

โ There is no container more hateful to Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), than a belly stuffed full with lawful food.

โ Of what use is the Fast as a means of conquering Allah's enemy and abating appetite, if at the time of breaking it one not only makes up for all one has missed during the daytime, but perhaps also indulges in a variety of extra foods?

โ It has even become the custom to stock up for Ramadan with all kinds of foodstuffs, so that more is consumed during that time than in the course of several other months put together.

โ It is well known that the object of Fasting is to experience hunger and to check desire, in order to reinforce the soul in piety (Taqwa).

โ If the stomach is starved from early morning till evening, so that its appetite is aroused and its craving intensified, and it is then offered delicacies and allowed to eat its fill, its taste for pleasure is increased and its force exaggerated; passions are activated which would have lain dormant under normal conditions.

โ The spirit and secret nature of Fasting is to weaken the forces which are Satan's means of leading us back to evil.

โ It is therefore essential to cut down one's intake to what one would consume on a normal night, when not Fasting.

โ No benefit is derived from the Fast if one consumes as much as one would usually take during the day and night combined.

โ Moreover, one of the properties consists in taking little sleep during the daytime, so that one feels the hunger and thirst and becomes conscious of the weakening of one's powers, with the consequent purification of the heart.

โ One should let a certain degree of weakness carry over into the night, making it easier to perform the night Prayers (tahajjud) and to recite the praises (awrad).

โ It may then be that Satan will not hover around one's heart, and that one will behold the Kingdom of Heaven.

โ The Night of Destiny represents the night on which something of this Kingdom is revealed. This is what is meant by the words of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) :

โ 'We surely revealed it on the Night of Power.'
[al-Qadr, 97:1]

โ Anyone who puts a bag of food between his heart and his breast becomes blind to this revelation.

โ Nor is keeping the stomach empty sufficient to remove the veil, unless one also empties the mind of everything but Allah, (Subhanahu wa ta'ala).

โ That is the entire matter, and the starting point of it all is cutting down on food. โ

โ›… 6. LOOK TO ALLAH WITH FEAR AND HOPE

โ–โ After the Fast has been broken, the heart should swing like a pendulum between fear and hope. For one does not know if one's Fast will be accepted, so that one will find favor with Allah, or whether it will be rejected, leaving one among those He abhors.

โ This is how one should be at the end of any act of worship one performs.

โ It is related of al-Hasan ibn Abil Hasan al-Basri that he once passed by a group of people who were laughing merrily. He said:

โ 'Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), has made the month of Ramadan a racecourse, on which His creatures compete in His worship. Some have come in first and won, while others have lagged behind and lost.

โ It is absolutely amazing to find anybody laughing and playing about on the day when success attends the victors, and failure the wasters.

โ By Allah, if the veil were lifted off, the doer of good would surely be preoccupied with his good works and the evildoer with his evil deeds.' In too full of joy to indulge in idle sport, while for one who has suffered rejection laughter will be precluded by remorse.

โ Of al-Ahnaf ibn Qays it is reported that he was once told: 'You are an aged elder; Fasting would enfeeble you.' But he replied: 'By this I am making ready for a long journey, Obedience to Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), is easier to endure than His punishment.'

โ Such are the inwardly significant meanings of Fasting.๐Ÿ…
