EXCLUSIVE: Ruben Amorim informs Manchester United squad he will be in charge next season + tells Alejandro Garnacho to find new club. Happened during meeting between Portuguese head coach & #MUFC players at Carrington training base today[David Ornstein]
Massive summer ahead
We can probably all agree that, so far, Amorim hasn’t shown enough, especially on the pitch, to fully justify backing him. And yet, I still believe in the idea of Amorim.

I know this sounds like blind faith, so let me explain. I said I still believe in the idea of Amorim, meaning his principles of play and his man-management. Two things that I believe can take this club back up.

When he was first linked with Liverpool last season, I had to dive deep into Sporting to write a script about them. And honestly? That was exactly the style of play I wanted to see at United.

Yes, it’s a 3/5 at the back, but it’s not passive. It’s proactive. The wide center-backs consistently timed their jumps well, whether defending deep or stepping into midfield, and that gave Sporting control even without the ball. The midfielders, too, were physical and aggressive in central areas. Now, the pressing issues we’re seeing at United were present there as well, but Sporting’s aggression from the back often made up for it.

As for the build-up, I don’t think it was nearly as poor as some have claimed. Sure, the inverted CB idea is becoming a net negative at Utd, and unless you’ve got a Stones or Calafiori type who can actually thrive there (which is rare) I don’t think it’ll work in the PL. But even so, I saw a team that could play around and through pressure, even in Champions League games.

Going forward, they created chances in multiple ways. There were direct vertical balls to the striker, but also sustained pressure in settled phases, especially via movement and triangles in the half-spaces, leading to cutbacks and high-quality chances.

In my view, if these ideas are implemented with the right profiles, and paired with tweaks to the pressing structure and intensity, there’s no reason United couldn’t dominate most games and build towards a real challenge.

But here’s the key question: these may be Amorim’s principles, but can he actually coach them in the Premier League? Is he a good enough manager to implement these ideas in a league that’s constantly evolving tactically and physically? That’s the part I’m unsure of. We can argue that he does not have “his” players, but come on, 7 months are enough to at least see some improvement.

What I am confident in, though, is his man-management. Which brings us back to the cultural reset we’re seeing now. Garnacho being axed is just the latest sign. Amorim is clearly trying to clean out negative habits, just like he did at Sporting in his first season, where he oversaw a major squad reshuffle.

I want Amorim to succeed. I’ve seen enough of his Sporting sides to know how well they can play. The issue, though, is clear: Liga NOS and the Premier League are light years apart both tactically and physically.

So even if the results aren’t there, my hope is that he leaves behind a group with the right mentality. A squad determined to bring this club back to where it belongs.

🚨 𝐍𝐄𝐖: André Onana has been told he can look for a new club. He’s unhappy about missing out on UCL football and with 25% wage cut. He is open to a Saudi move. Selling him won’t be easy due to his £26m book value, but Amorim wants a new No.1. #MUFC [AliceTalksFooty]
