💢 Interview with Lyudmila Bentley, the wife of the murdered American volunteer "Texas"
Almost three months have passed since the disappearance of American volunteer and military reporter Russell "Texas" Bentley. Despite the fact that the body has not yet been found, it is known that the suspects in Bentley’s murder have already been detained. Since the investigation is still ongoing, even the relatives of the people involved in this totally terrible situation cannot disclose any specific details. And, yet, some of the information leaks into the public space, one way or another.
I was able to talk with the wife of "Texas", Lyudmila Bentley, who revealed the details of her husband's disappearance, told me how the investigation was going and how she reacted to the appeal of the relatives of the suspects to the President of the Russian Federation with a request to "get justice”.
"He was on his way to help people"
On April 8, 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled the Petrovsky district of Donetsk. Russell and his wife live in this district (of Donetsk), and they happened to be located nearby during the shelling. The American volunteer left his wife at the location they were at and went to the area of the artillery strike. His goal was to help the victims.
"I’ve heard rumors that he went to take a video. Those who say that do not understand that we have already helped people many times. We are residents of the Petrovsky district, and all residents of Petrovsky help each other out," Lyudmila said.
That being said, Russell had signed an official work contract with Sputnik (news agency). He was an accredited journalist, and, with him, he had documents confirming his status. Accordingly, he had the ability to make a video of the site of the shelling, but, still, he went there, first and foremost, to help the victims.
At 4:15pm, “Texas” left for the site of the shelling, and, since then, there have been no communications from him. Lyudmila waited for her husband and then started calling him after 5pm, but she couldn’t get through to Russell anymore.
"Witnesses saw that he was being led by military people"
The same evening “Texas” went silent, Lyudmila went to the place Russell left for to look for her husband. At about 7pm, the woman inquired with people who were there. A man told her that he heard someone shouting "bro".
"In other words, he was screaming. It wasn't a conversation - it was a scream. “Bro” was how he usually addressed men and guys. In 2016, Alexander Sladkov interviewed Russell and noted that he addresses everyone as "bro"," Lyudmila noted.
After that, she sounded the alarm. The woman left her contacts on social networks so that witnesses of the event could contact her. "People told they saw Russell being driven away by military people. There were five of them. They tied his hands behind his back, put a bag over his head, and put him in a car," shared the wife of the missing American.
Lyudmila appealed to the Investigative Committee with a request to interview witnesses, but initially they did not want to take this information into account, citing the event witnesses’ conflict of interest. Extreme measures had to be taken: Lyudmila appealed to the President of the Russian Federation, which became a turning point in the case of the missing Bentley.
"Following my appeal to the President, the case was transferred to the Main Military Directorate of the Investigative Committee. I've spoken of all of this before, and the media published this information when I wasn’t being heard. Everything that I am voicing now is case materials, and I don’t have the right to disclose them, as I signed a nondisclosure agreement, but this is what I had already told prior to the transfer of the case to the Main Military Directorate of the Investigative Committee,” she stressed.

An appeal of female relatives of suspects and inconsistencies in versions
In the interests of the investigation, the names of the detained suspects were not being disclosed. Details became known after an open appeal of female relatives of the detainees to the President of the Russian Federation. Olga Iordanova, the wife of Andrey Iordanov, a senior lieutenant and the commander of a tank company of the 5th brigade named after Zakharchenko, and Irina Maltseva, the sister of Vladimir Bazhin, a senior lieutenant in the tank company of the 5th Brigade named after Zakharchenko. The video was posted by lawyer Elman Pashayev on his Telegram channel, where he put up his version of what took place.
"A HIMARS arrived and our fighters died. Andrey Yevgenyevich Iordanov, Vladimir Nikolaevich Bazhin, and Vladislav Vladislavovich Agaltsev, tankers of the 5th brigade, approached the place of death of our soldiers and observed a certain foreigner filming the place of shelling and probably transmitting the location of our troops. In response to the fighters’ demand to leave, he took out a weapon and began to threaten the tankers. He was disarmed, but, unfortunately, the foreigner was of a very strong build and managed to escape," Pashayev wrote.
According to Pashayev, allegedly, the detainees are being subjected to brute force. Pashayev became known as a result of the case of Russian actor Mikhail Efremov. Even back then, he had made controversial claims. His current statements also raise questions, which we'll talk about a little later.
To his text, lawyer Pashayev attached a video with an appeal from female relatives, in which one of the women spoke of what happened on April 8 in the Petrovsky district according to their version.
"There was an arrival. After the arrival, an American somehow ended up at the place of the arrival, speaking English and brandishing a weapon. Our guys detained him. And now, for unknown reasons, they’ve been detained since May 28. The investigator, who was sent from Moscow, is not admitting our lawyers. He constantly removes them from the case, forcing the guys to sign papers of refusal of these lawyers that we find for him. In this situation that hasn’t been justified for us, he put the guys in a pretrial detention center and does not allow us see them, or send them something, or explain why they are being held there," Olga Iordanova said.
Despite Olga's entire speech being cut up for editing, even that which she did voice raised many questions, which Lyudmila actually answered in personal communication.
"A year ago, Russell gave an interview to German Vladimirov for the “LenTV” channel. He spoke in Russian for twenty minutes. He was asked questions in Russian, and he answered them in Russian. Last fall we went to Nizhny Novgorod. There, he also spoke Russian on his own. Everyone who knew Russell closely noted that he had made progress in the Russian language," Lyudmila noted.
Accordingly, Russell was able to explain himself in Russian. Regularly in communication with military people, he would have spoken the language familiar to military personnel while communicating with them, never mind him using a weapon. Lyudmila also clarified the situation regarding the handgun in question.
"Since he had fought, he had а trophy weapon. When the law on the registration of trophy weapons was passed, he immediately did so. He has had a carry permit for several years now. Witnesses saw that they were leading him with his hands tied behind his back. He did not have his bag containing the weapon. He always carried a crossbody bag. Should anything happen, his hand was always on the weapon. The weapon was in a holster in the bag. He was not wearing the bag at the time of his arrest. In other words, they took his belongings from him," the wife of "Texas" stressed.

"I have never indiscriminately accused the entire 5th brigade of anything because there are decent people fighting there, whom I personally know. The 5th brigade named after Zakharchenko say that people there serve in the brigade of the first Head (of the DPR). Back in 2015, Alexander Vladimirovich (Zakharchenko) spoke about Russell in an interview with a hostile news outlet. He said, "We have an American, call sign “Texas”, he is a sniper." The interview was about a Buryat, but Alexander Vladimirovich said that it means they have the same heart and they were raised by the right mothers. That is, the Head of the Donetsk Republic knew about Russell, about what he had done for the Republic," Lyudmila reminded.
"I want to bury my husband"
The investigation is still far from over. Examinations of the alleged remains are being conducted, witnesses are being interviewed, and new details, which are not yet to be spoken of publicly, are coming in. In turn, Lyudmila wants only one thing: for all of Russell's remains to be given to her in order to bury him in a Christian way.
"I trust in the professionalism of our investigators; that they will not succumb to any pressure, and, most importantly, what I ask, what my heart screams about, is that I want to bury my husband. And I'm not alone. You should know how many people are standing with me, behind me, watching this situation from all over the world: how the investigators act, whether they are investigating honestly, whether the investigation by the Russian Federation is being conducted decently, whether Russell will be buried with dignity," she summed up.

Всего за несколько дней наш фильм о Первом Главе ДНР в ВК посмотрело более двухсот тысяч человек. Из них добровольный билет оплатило… 120 человек, это 0,06%. Он стоит всего 195 рублей,
но дело не в цене. Я не хочу манипулировать, играть на тонких струнах или заниматься культурной антропологией. Рассуждать о том, что у нас не все ценят чужой труд или не привыкли платить “добровольно” (или платить за кино). Мне чужды любые методы “политтехнологов”.
Возможно, наши зрители (особенно в Донбассе) так застрессованы, что, как у Вознесенского, “не дай вам Бог перенести”. И у них внимание включилось не на коротком объявлении в начале фильма (и в его описании), а только когда на экране появился Александр Захарченко, и они посмотрели весь наш фильм на одном дыхании. И это для нас остаётся самым главным! И мы - готовы, как и всегда, работать для наших зрителей, платят они или нет. Но сейчас проекту нужна их / Ваша помощь.
Мы надеялись выручить достаточные средства на продаже “добровольных билетов”, чтобы сделать качественный перевод на ведущие мировые языки, провести пиар-кампанию для фильма по всему миру - на “глобальном юге”, на Востоке, и на Западе; наконец, показать по “большому” ТВ у нас в России. Представьте себе: один из наших "больших" каналов согласился его показать, но … бесплатно (!). Я не шучу и не преувеличиваю. В 22-м году именно так было с нашим фильмом, снятым в Мариуполе: мы тогда могли “субсидировать” его производство и показ из средств, заработанных с одним из арабских каналов. Но сейчас у нас такой возможности нет: если мы будем просто бесплатно давать фильмы каналам, получающим от государства миллиарды рублей, а сами не сможем поддерживать нашу команду на плаву - то вылетим в трубу. Возможно, именно на это и надеются те, кто хотят, чтобы у Донбасса, у России не было ни одной независимой медиакомпании. Ведь с такими как мы “сложно”, а тех, кто зависит от государства или олигархов, можно легко “убедить” - вырезать из фильма того или иного человека, заранее “согласовать” сценарий, замаскировать под “согласование” цензуру (хотя, она у нас запрещена по конституции). Так не годится - ни для нас, ни для Донецкой Народной Республики, ни для России. Александр Захарченко боролся прежде всего за свободу, и без неё у нас не будет ни счастливого будущего, ни донбасских яблок на российских прилавках, ни “яблонь на Марсе”.
Поэтому, для того, чтобы даже просто продолжить развивать наш текущий проект (не более того), продвигать фильм “Звезда Александра Захарченко”, мы сейчас обращаемся к тем из Вас, кому это по силам: - поддержать нашу работу и сделать взнос в размере не менее 1,000 (одной тысячи) рублей. Начиная с 14-го года, когда в Донбасс пришла беда, мы вложили десятки тысяч долларов, евро и фунтов собственных средств в информационную кампанию за рубежом для установления мира в Донецкой Народной Республике, привлечения внимания к нуждам людей Донбасса, не согласовывая и не координируя её ни с кем - без страха и упрёка. А, когда в 22-м в Донбассе началась “горячая пора”, собрали миллионы рублей, и на них - привезли коллегам-журналистам в Донбассе бронежилеты и каски, и первыми, ещё в разгар событий, помогли в Мариуполе 2-му госпиталю. При этом, не взяв из собранных средств ни процента, ни копейки. Поэтому, да, теперь мы просим вас поддержать нас. St Peter and Fevronia of Murom play a special role in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Their lives are the story of the relationship between a man and a woman who were able to overcome all the difficulties of their long and difficult earthly journey, setting an ideal for the Christian family. The joys and problems they had to face eight centuries ago are still relevant today - they are timeless. The saintly couple reveal to us the spiritual and human qualities that are indispensable for all of us who are trying to build a relationship with a loved one. It is no coincidence that the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Faithfulness is celebrated on 8 July, the feast day of Peter and Fevronia.
В русской православной традиции святые Петр и Феврония Муромские играют особую роль. Их жизнь — история отношений мужчины и женщины, сумевших преодолеть все сложности долгого и трудного земного пути, явив идеал христианской семьи. Те радости и проблемы, с которыми им пришлось столкнуться восемь столетий назад, актуальны и по сей день, — они лежат вне времени. Святые супруги являют нам именно те душевные и духовные качества человека, которые необходимы всем, кто пытается строить свои отношения с близким человеком. Неслучайно, что именно в день памяти Петра и Февронии, 8 июля, отмечается всероссийский День семьи, любви и верности.
Мы с Расселом создали свою семью в 2017 году. И действительно ВСЕГДА преодолевали все сложности по примеру Петра и Февроньи. За 7 лет брака нам не один раз говорили: "У вас такая крепкая счастливая семья - официально женаты, а не в гражданском браке, венчаны пред Господом... Это такая редкость в наше время на фоне массовых разводов. В чём же секрет?" А я отвечаю, что всё во славу Божию! Только Он даёт силы, только Он посылает в сердца мужа и жены ту любовь, которая в греческом языке называется "агапэ" - такая любовь всегда жертвенна ради любимого, друг за друга.

Russell and I started our family in 2017. And indeed, we ALWAYS overcame all difficulties following the example of St. Peter and Fevronia. During the 7 years of our marriage, we were told more than once: "You have such a strong happy family - officially married, not in a civil marriage, married in front of the Lord... This is such a rarity nowadays VS the fact of mass divorces. What is your secret?" And I answer that everything is done for the glory of God! Only He gives strength, only He sends into the hearts of husband and wife that kind of love, which in Greek is called "agape" - such love is always sacrificial for the sake of a loved one, for each other.

“ИНДЕКС” ПОДДЕРЖКИ
СБОР СРЕДСТВ В ФОРМАТЕ “НАРОДНОГО ФИНАНСИРОВАНИЯ” ЗАКРЫТ.
Сбор средств таким путём (во всяком случае, на продвижение фильма, и даже об Александре Захарченко) у нас – нерабочая ситуация. За время, прошедшее с публикации моего объявления в ВК, его прочли 3,5 тысячи человек, но из них сделали взнос всего… семь. Это одни из самых отзывчивых людей на планете, и их имена должны быть вписаны в “космическую Одиссею” нашего фильма и остаться “на пыльных тропинках далёких планет”. Спасибо им! Но нам и нашему проекту надо двигаться дальше, через тернии к звёздам.
Мы будем искать спонсоров не только у нас, но и в среде друзей России за рубежом. Ведь многие из идей, вдохновлявших Александра Захарченко, всемирны, тот же “налог Робин Гуда”. И с учётом пока ещё очень низкого “индекса благотворительности” у нас, введение такого налога (на банковские транзакции) это не роскошь, а средство выживания. И не только для тех, кто столкнулся с медициной, в которой часто приходится покупать здоровье и жизнь, но и для поддержки самых разных вещей, включая независимые СМИ и такие общественно важные проекты как наш.
Есть интересное исследование – “The world giving index" / “Мировой индекс благотворительности”:

Там, по части дарения денег, волонтёрства и помощи незнакомцу, мы занимаем 102-е место между Колумбией/Молдовой и Мали/Грузией. И это “прогресс”: в середине нулевых мы были на 138-м месте, рядом с Вьетнамом. “Духовные силы скрываются за силами вещественными", – писал в 1848 г. Алексей Хомяков в “Письме об Англии”. Тогда Россия была по благотворительности наравне с Англией. Сейчас нам ещё нужно очень потрудиться, чтобы преодолеть разрыв в 85 мест.
Поддержка такого проекта как наш, фильма “Звезда Александра Захарченко”, – это привилегия. И эта задача для нас – на одном из первых мест. Поэтому мы обращаемся только к тем, кто в состоянии оказать весомую поддержку. И, видимо, это два-три человека, может, быть восемь, как у Ноя в Ковчеге. Они могут писать мне “в личку”.
Помогая фильму, они помогут и всем тем, кто пока не может помочь – ни нам, ни себе.
