LineageOS 20.0: A few more days to go!
Earlier we told you guys that LineageOS will be announcing their next major version release on the last day of 2022, and when this post goes live, that means there's only five days left. Let's keep you guys updated with some information over here.

The announcement seems to be ready for publication on that day. If you are wondering how many devices are going to be on the build roster for LineageOS 20, that's a whopping 44, for now. I don't think they will be delaying the release of it, but some Pixel devices won't be joining the club on the very first day, as build signature issues still persist.

Here's the updated list of which Pixel devices will be receiving LineageOS 20 builds:
• Pixel 4 (flame)
• Pixel 4 XL (coral)
• Pixel 4a (sunfish)
• Pixel 4a 5G (bramble)
• Pixel 5 (redfin)
• Pixel 5a (barbet)

As we mentioned earlier, devices that are still on 18.1 will still be getting monthly updates, and apparently there are still 61 devices being maintained on this particular version. Android 12 introduced one raspy requirement: BPF, hence resulting in large numbers of old devices not being able to receive newer versions of builds. Good to know that LineageOS didn't decide to abandon it just yet.

Okay, nothing else interesting to announce over here. Rest of them you could read in the blog which is roughly the same stuff. Read more: Introducing LineageOS 'Aperture'

LineageOS 20, the early surprise is here
LineageOS

You thought this might come up months later, but this is the truth (also we made a prediction), LineageOS will be starting to distribute official builds of Android 13 from now on, alongside with LineageOS 18.1 (monthly release) & 19.1.

For now, Pixel 4 & 5 series (including mid-range A-series) are the only Pixel devices to receive official builds from LineageOS, originally Pixel devices as old from Pixel 2 series all the way till Pixel 7 series will be receiving the same treatment, but due to build signature issues and incomplete device tree development, these are being delayed for now. For the case of Pixel 1, it will stick with Android 11 for the meantime.

Anyway, besides Pixel devices, other 45 (total: 51) devices from different manufacturers are receiving the update too. Of course, even if your device isn't in the list, you can always check your community if there's a build for your device or not if interested.

Extra features on LineageOS (Others)
Time flies and we have almost finished introducing all LineageOS features, let's check out what LineageOS has to offer.

Charging sounds
Just like your ringtone, notification and alarm sounds, you can choose your preferred sound when you plugged in your device. If you want it to be completely silent, there is the option for you to disable it and the vibration.

Screen lock
For patterns, there is 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6 grid size. Just a note that if you used Google Backup, 3x3 is the only one that is going to work while restoring your data. If you use PIN, you can choose to randomise the number order by scrambling the PIN layout, that's enabled by default.

QS tiles
Lastly, there are a few available QS tiles in LineageOS are added by the team itself. Those are: Caffeine, Heads Up, Sync, Ambient Display, USB Tethering, AOD, Wireless PowerShare, Reading mode, NFC, System profiles, VPN, Volume panel. Tiles available vary across devices as not every device has every feature.

Extra features on LineageOS (Connections)
A phone can maximise its potential by connecting to the Internet, so that you can browse the web, communicate with others, get the latest information and so much more. LineageOS has added a few neat features over at connection which will make someone's day.

You can toggle network access for applications or disable in certain conditions, like whether they can access the device's Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Also you can disable background & VPN data access, and another option is to let the app have unrestricted data usage when Data Saver is enabled. This particular feature is pretty neat for those who have limited network quota.

Besides, you can let hotspot clients use your device's VPN if available. By default, your device actually doesn't share out the VPN connection, which means devices connected to the hotspot will only get the direct network traffic from your phone, and LineageOS makes that possible with just a single toggle, no root required too.

What's good about LineageOS?
When some people heard of LineageOS, they will just think that it's a barebone ROM with very less to no features. Technically it's not wrong but it comes with some useful exchanges.

Easy-to-use OTA
As we all know, OTA updates is suppose to ease the process of updatng the device to a later version of build. Many ROMs included it but then sometimes when there is some major changes being made, the ROM developer then send out a notice that users have to clean flash in order to use the latest build version, so I wonder what's literally the purpose of including it if users have to skip using this feature once in a while, and it's not even upgrading Android version yet.

With LineageOS, rest assured as LineageOS do the updating process for you in just a few clicks. If your device supports Seamless Update, it is even better as Magisk will be preserved during the process. For upgrade, most of the time you just have to boot into recovery and sideload the update, then flash additional packages you use and done, not a single wipe involved if you followed the steps correctly.

Longer Lifespan
It's no-brainer that manufacturers stop releasing updates for their older models since the hardware started to show its age and most users will have already switch to using a better device. Android custom ROM community provides the opportunity to extend the lifespan of the device, LineageOS is one of them, and it might run better too. And if you don't know yet, it's also use as proof of concept for many legacy devices.

Lightweight & Open-Source Apps
The applications came with the ROM by default is fully open-source and weigh less than 10MB in size, most devices shouldn't have any issues running them. It also doesn't come with any unnecessary stuff included, only providing the services it needed to work, which means you get more storage space to play around with too.

Customisations but is it relevant?
Okay customisations, yes it's cool to have those options and make it uniquely your device, and by now, you can already use modules to extend the ability to do so. Just a reminder that phones are invented for communicating with each others from far apart, and all of these customisations won't last long forever, but your friendship will, so think clearly about it. With a few set of useful features & customisations, this also means less bugs to be found across the ROM, and most likely it will be AOSP fault if there is one.

It's For Everyone
For starters, this is an easy go-to option. And for experienced users, they appreciated the features and the clean experience provided in this ROM, so yeah, it's for everyone to use. If you don't wish to wipe your device oftenly, this is a good ROM to opt-in for.

Yeah, probably this post won't get any attention or what, but I will just left it here and hope it could inspire more people to use LineageOS. If you haven't tried it out or use it on a long-term basis, then you should definitely give a try.
