As a headteacher, you strive to feel confident and assured that you're on top of things.

You're riding the curve, hitting peak performance, giving everything that you can, and getting things right.

And then something big happens in your personal life.

And things change. You don't have the clarity, the time or the energy. There are other things happening in your life that are more important. It's not uncommon.

This is a possibility for any headteacher. When you realise that you have been working at peak performance for years, giving school everything that you've got, yet unknowingly teetering on the edge of a dangerous tipping point.

Work aware. Consider sustainability. Prioritise capacity in school. Take breaks, time out and dedicated headship time. Prioritise your work-life balance.

Keep something in reserve.

Know that headship is what you do, it's not who you are.
